54 M100 power steering identification
Hello I have a 54 M100 with power steering I am trying to ID what p. s. unit I have. I need to replace lines and seals on the p.s. unit. The lines I can have made up if need be but where to get seals/ rebuilt p.s. unit I do not know. I was able to ad photos... thanks for the help with that. Hope it helps with the identification.
OK here goes.... this is a 2 part ram system that is located in the drivers side inner fender well. It has a high and low pressure lines from pump and lines between the 2 parts of the ram. I have never come across this set up before and was hoping someone here has.
This is my cousins truck, who passed away a couple of years back, so I do not know if this came stock or was added at some point. Before I make up new lines I would like to replace at least the one known leaking seal. It leaks at the ball/ socket seal of the steering box arm to first part of ram. The parts illustration book shows a one part ram set up for the bigger trucks but nothing for a double part ram system that I have here.
Thanks in advance

Welcome to FTE!
As stated, one way to post pics is to use Photobucket
Go to http://photobucket.com/ and sign up for a free account. Then create an album for your truck. Upload any pics you want to post on FTE to that album. Have this album open on your computer when you want to post pics on FTE.
While you're making a post on FTE, select the pic you want to post from your Photobucket album. When the large version of the pic is open, right mouse click on it and select "View Image Info". The image info will be highlighted and will look something like this:
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...ghtsafter1.jpg
Copy that highlighted info (right click / copy).
When you have the spot in your post where you want the pic to be placed, select the "Insert Image" icon at the top of the post (looks like a mountain) and paste (right click / paste) the image info you copied in the highlighted box (just shows "http://" when it opens).
Your pic will be placed in the post.
Hope that helps.

Power Assist P/S: Two long P/S hoses, pressure and return, route from the pump to the control valve. Two short P/S hoses, pressure and return, route from the control valve to the ram cylinder.
The manual steering gearbox is used, as it has nothing to do with Power Assist. Power Assist P/S was used on myriad 1953/80 Ford/Merc Passenger Cars.
Does the P/S pump have the reservoir bolted to the top of it (1953/64 all & 1965 Mustang before 8/23/1964 Eaton P/S pump)? Or is the steel reservoir made as part of the pump (1965/77 Ford/Thompson pump)?
P/S was not available for these trucks, so whatever it has was swapped in.
Preston Ledbetter (now deceased), former Ford partsman who owned F100 Parts Unlimited in San Jose CA, made up P/S for these trucks.
He cut the draglink, then threaded it so the 1953/60 Ford control valve could be threaded on. Used Y block Eaton P/S pumps, mounting brackets, ram cylinder and P/S hoses.

1965/77 Ford pump with the steel reservoir. 1978 and later pumps have a plastic reservoir, are smaller in diameter.
The P/S pulley isn't an original, what it's from, I haven't a clue.
What size is the engine? Painted Ford Corporate Blue didn't occur until 1966.

If the engine has been swapped to a later OHV V8, that might be a clue as to what the P/S components came from....IF the year/vehicle the engine came from can be determined.
1953/60, 1961/80: There are two different ram cylinders, two different seal kits. Both kits can be bought from autoparts stores.

I was gonna say what one could see of the valve cover looked like it was from a 221/260/289/302.
1965 and later full sized Fords came with Ford integral P/S, not Power Assist. The ram cylinder in previous pic looks like the type that was used on 1961/80 Passenger Cars.
C1AZ-3A764-A .. P/S Cylinder Seal Kit / Obsolete ~ Dozens available NOS and with the following applications, you should have no trouble buying it from an autoparts store.
1961/64 Ford Galaxie/Custom/500 XL & full sized Mercs / 1962/70 Fairlane/Torino / 1963/70 Falcon/Comet / 1965/70 Mustang/Cougar / 1970/77 Maverick/Comet / 1975/80 Granada/Monarch / 1977/80 Lincoln Versailles.
If you want a genuine Ford kit in NY: NORTZ & VIRKLER FORD in Lowville (315-376-6594) and F.X. CAPRARA FORD in Pulaski (315-298-5114) have ONE each.
