I've never done it but here's 3 things I do know
1. Its expensive and lots of labor
2. It will NEVER pay for itself in MPG.
3. Its easier to trade your truck in on a diesel.

If your doing it for fun, I say go for it. I'm always up for reading about projects! I had a buddy do this, and it took him about 2-3 months.

Yes, I have heard about it but it will take two complete trucks and alot of time. The transmissions will bolt up but the torque converters will need to be changed and the internals are slightly different in the two.

I work in automotive and have been turning wrenches for over 10 yrs now. Never had a diesel before but thought it would be cool to build up the motor and then drop it in!! Cost wise anyone have a clue about what it might cost??

Well being that I am now driving a diesel I do know this.
The engine weight for the 6.0 is about 1000Lb
So you will have to beef up the front end for more weight
You will need to do something to the ECM so it will think diesel
You may have to change the transmission because the shift ranges are no where
near the same. It would take less time and money to just swap your
body onto a diesel frame. Even then you will have some ECM programming
depending on the options in the body.

Shoot, I would put the biggest supercharger that would fit on the v10 and be done with it, or get a different truck.

Good luck.

X100
If I had all the time and money in the world I wouldn't bother with the idea of a swap. Go buy a diesel.

I am planning this exact swap. I am purchasing a wrecked truck that is the exact configuration of what I have. I plan on swapping everything under the hood, except for the master cylinder. I plan on swapping out the dash, wiring, and heater system in the cab. I am going to swap the trans and transfer case too. The last thing is the fuel system, incliding the fuel tank. This sounds like quite the undertaking, but after dismanteling a few of these truck, everything is actually well layed out to come out as "units".

Now, the question always asked, WHY. I have a 2001 F-250 Extend cab Long bed. I purchased this truck 4 years ago at a rock bottom price due to miles on it. It currently has 288,000 miles on it. If you look at the outside and interior, you would swear it has 88,000 miles. I couldnt sell this truck around here for any more than $4500. We all know what the diesels are going for. I cant find anything as clean as my truck (I live in he salt belt) for under $12000 and even then, its got the same milage as mine. I'm a cheap SOB and I am sure as hell not paying that kind of money for a 12 year old truck that is half rotted. I got my donor truck for under $2000, plus I have parted out stuff I dont need and made some of that money back.

To many to list.

No, that's not right.

A V10 and a 7.3L have different bolt patterns. They will NOT interchange. If we're talking a 6.0L, that does have the same bolt pattern as a V10, but the 6.0L was never mated to the 4R100, so you would need an aftermarket stand alone transmission controller.

with a donor truck, I don't see it being that big of a deal really. Just time. The trucks are very modular and everything is very swapable from truck to truck as they are not independently designed for the engine going into them. That being said, if you had the room to pop the cab off, it would in reality just be lego swapping it all over. If you have a donor truck though and the frame is straight, I would just plop your cab and bed on the diesel frame and call it macaroni. Also remember that you need the all the other stuffs that go with a diesel like the vacuum pump etc. that aren't found on the gassers.
