OK, how 'bout this.
Get a crappo grade 1 bolt the same diameter as the hole in your spring perches. Drill a hole down through the center of the crappo bolt that's the same diameter as the SHCS head on your spring pack bolt. Cut a couple of short lengths out of the unthreaded section of the crappo bolt. Voila (that's Freedom, 'fenders ), a couple of nice bushings for your spring perches.
Next, buy extra-long SHCS bolts for your spring packs. Put the bolt in from the bottom but put washers under the head to lengthen the part under the spring pack so the bolt head will extend through the shims and fit in the nice bushing you just made from the crappo bolt. If you buy the right OD washers, they should fit nicely in the slot in the shim.
A little work, a great solution. Gotta go now, my arm hurts from patting myself on the back.

Rage,
If your shims are like mine, the slot is the same width as the spring bolt head. The slot goes towards the thick end. For the shim to slide out, it has to go towards the back. It can't go back unless your U bolt nuts have unscrewed 1/4". If they are that loose, you be on the jacks, not on the street. The hole in my spring perches is the same size as the original rear end. My 9" is from a 72 pickup.

"If WalMart is dropping prices every day, why isn't anything free yet?!?"
Actually you can walk into any WalMart and the nice man will hand you a yellow smiley face sticker no charge. You immediately turn around and leave. The real question is how WalMart stays solvent with tactics like this. HMMM, Ever think about that one?
And back to the subject of this hijacked thread. Joe, if this problem even makes your top 50 when it's over I'll be amazed. Be nice to the machinists at work and they can cure this 37 different ways. Heck, even George's hairbrained idea would work.
Concern yourself with important things like "how do I get the tire smoke smell out of my interior fabric so the girls will ride with me".
