2002 explorer ignition lock replacement

Lock cylinder needs replacing. Was stuck in the off position and would not rotate. Finally freed it up so I can remove the cylinder.
Question is, will the key that comes with the new cylinder need to be programed. If so how is this done?

Thanks,
Mike

Key programming instructions are included in the owner's manual. If you don't have an owner's manual, it can be downloaded by clicking here.

If you have 2 keys programmed, you can program another key yourself. Of course, you wont have any keys programmed, so that won't be an option.

You can have the dealer or locksmith program the new key. I would look into having a locksmith key the new cylinder to work with your existing keys, then you should be all set.

Don't go by what I say. The best bet would be to discuss your options with a locksmith.

Good luck getting it sorted.

Thanks for replying.

All is well.
The new cylinder does not come with keys. It has a tumbler kit that lets you configure the new cylinder to your existing key, or to change it I suppose.
Included were step by step directions that were easy to follow.
I assembled the new cylinder and it works like a champ.
