Hi,
Well I lost my keys this weekend to my 78 f100.I dropped them in the swamp while running form a gator (I kid you not), and I am not headed back there to look for them.Is there any way of avoiding a ridiculous locksmith cost? I called the local ford dealer and they just laughed at me. I guess the truck is too old.
I fiddled with the ignition cylinder and tried to get it out, is there a trick to it?, is it possible without the ignition key. LOcks are not a problem really just the ignition. Thanks
The new lock cylinder and key is a good idea except for 1 thing..... you have to have the old key to remove the old lock cylinder.
Removing the cylinder and switch assembly should be straight forward. The ring around the outside of the key (has 3 square indents on it) is the lock ring. Unscrew it and the switch should come out. Unplug it from the harness and take the switch to the locksmith. I had a key cut and it cost me $10.00.
You can get all new locks(not just cylinders) and keys with ignition cylinder for $30 at broncograveyard.com . You dont need the old keys to remove the door locks, just the ignition cylinder. fortunately (or unfortunately) you can pick it very easily. If not just take the iginition switch and new cylinder to a locksmith and he should be able to swap them out very easily and cheaply.
If your truck doors and ignition are keyed alike like they are suppused to be then take the door apart and remove the lock cylinder and bring it to a lock smith and tell them that you would like a TWO keys made to fit it. Then you have a key that fits all your locks total cost around here $5. Take your second key and put it in your wallet then you will never be locked out!!!
P.S. For the price of getting a copy of a key compared to the price of a locksmith why wouldn't you just have a copy made.
I don't know that the door and ignition keys were all the same. It may have been an option. But I've had 2 '76 models and neither had the door and ignition the same. In fact the shape of the key blanks were mirror images so there was no way a door key would fit an ignition cylinder. Both of my trucks were so stock it wasn't funny and the first one I had was only 2 years old when I got it.
