I feel your pain!!! It's brutal... I hope there are a few ways, but from what I've read I think we're outta luck

It's been asked many, many, many times and really there is no silver bullet for improved mileage. Think of mileage like your 401K, you're not gonna get rich over nite, but by being very careful every single day, you can get what you need. By that, I mean every single time you drive your truck, think mileage, mileage, mileage. Drive as if there were an egg under the gas pedal, try to "time" the stop lights in town so you don't have to come to a complete stop, keep the revs under 2K when accelerating and drive no faster than 60 on the freeway. By using these very techniques, I can drag 12 city, 14 hwy out of my V10, where my wife gets 10 freeway and single digits in town in the same truck. But you gotta make it a constant goal, one 75 mph run on the freeway, a few stop light drag races and forget it. You can always park the truck as a driver, buy a cheap little car and likely save enough money on gas to justify the purchase. I know it worked for me.

Not much you can do to make any real improvement. We're talking about a 7000+ pound chunk of steel that's not exactly aerodynamic. It takes a lot of power to move these things down the road. Best thing you can do is drive like Grandma going to church.
Best average I've ever seen with mine was 14, and that was with mostly highway driving. Typically I get around 12 mpg.

That's impressive! What kind of mileage were you getting before the exhaust, intake and programer? And what setting are you running the programmer on?

Don't get sucked into buying things just because some random internet guy with 2 posts makes a claim. I see this all the time on all kinds of forums and I can tell you that he either lives in some dead flat state with no winds or he's not being honest. Look around, read the other posts, big trucks with small motors are NOT a recipe for good mileage. I've seen those same claims made by guys with V10's and some really out there numbers made by some of the diesel crowd, but there is no way on earth a cai (worthless) a cat-back system and a tuner is going to bring your truck up 5mpg. Don't believe everything you read. If it were that easy, EVERYONE would know about it.

Your mpg is right on taget. My 2010 5.4 gets 17 hiway at not-over 65 mph, unless it is windy. I get 12-13.5 in town and I drive very easy.
Driving habits are a big issue....my wife gets 17 mpg on her Edge, and i always get 21mpg or better.
This is my 3rd Superduty and they are all about the same, except for the v10 i had...it only got 15 mpg hiway and 11 or so in town.
I have been a car junky all my life and have spent thousands of dollars on cold air intakes, exhaust systems, and tuners/programmers. I even had a custom tune done.
The end result was that i spend thousands of dollars!!! Never saw much of any improvement in mpg or power. The only exception was that i did get "some" little bit of power back from the custom tune, after i had gone to super oversize wheels and tires....but the mpg went to he!! running those big tires.
Story short, if there was a way to get better mpg fron a 7,000 truck, i am sure Ford would have already done it....wouldn't it be great for sales if Ford could advertise that the Superduty gets 25+ mpg?
So, I drive my Superduty, use it to haul and tow and as my daily driver. I too have thought about buying a beater with a 4 banger for good mpg....the problem it that when you add up the cost of e car, maintenance, needed repairs, gasoline, insurance and the extra time needed to keep the dam thing running, i opted to use that money to pay for the gas so I can enjoy my Superduty Lariat.

Waterboy, I am usually running the 93 Octane Performance tune to get the most HP and TQ out of the motor. It's not a massive amount as it would be for diesels but it helps. I was getting 12/14 city/hwy before the improvements. Combining what I have with "good" driving habits has helped me. I have also added a Tonneau Cover for the bed to help a bit on the air vortex during highway driving.
Sandman, Yes I do live in Texas where it is mostly flat. I know it is a heavy truck, but this is what I have done and got. These are merely suggestions. I am not trying to sell anything or have anyone buy anything. I work in the oil and gas industry so I am all about buying gas (not that I wish gallons and gallons for people). I wouldn't post on here if it didn't work for me.
For towing I cannot speak, but I forwarded these suggestions to a friend that works on a seismic crew and he says it has helped travelling long distances.
