IDI Vs powerstroke
Hey guys, I once again have a question so when I want the truth about the IDI here is the place to come. I am a proud IDI owner and this is a great running truck used everyday for hauling RV's (whish it paid more and wasnt so fun to do) but I don't have a turbo and have been trying to get the funds bilt to put one on cause the milage is decent for what the truck is but to make $ the gas mileage has to be as good as it can I get about 10mpg loaded and 16-18 empty, it has the stock rearend and runs like a champ. I have an opportunity to trade a couple of cars of mine for a 1996 powerstroke turbo crewcab 4x4 with 330,000 (same as my idi) mines a 94. What fuel milage should i expect and any other concerns with this year etc. I sure appreciate your imput ...Kevin

As you see in my sig., I run both. For what I use my trucks for, the fuel milage is a toss up between the IDI and stroke, but the trucks are used as chore trucks- shorter slow speed, off road farm chores, which yeild around 12 mpg. The best fuel milage I got with the 97, was on the 100 mile trip home when I purchased it which was 17.5. This was driving around 80, I had a hell of a time keeping it at the speed limit as it was snappier. The best I got with the 85 with the 6.9 and added turbo was 15.5 on a 200 mile parts run. Both engines are great. In your case switching to the stroke, from the non turboed IDI there will be no comparision in power, the stroke will win hands down. Add a turbo and a little tweeking to the IdI, the power will be about the same as a STOCK PSD. The PSD can be made to make some reliable power with a chip and bigger injectors, inter cooler and ect., but you can get a whole set of new IDI injectors for what one new injector for the stroke costs. For what it's worth the guys over in the OBS stroke forum say the odometer the the OBS 94.5-97 trucks rolls back to 300K when you hit 400K.

thanks 94. Thats why i love this site.....lots of info both ways for us less informed. Keep it coming though...and the fact that I will end up with both the idi and a psd just for trading a couple cars I dont need and arent worth but about 3000.00 for both i'm starting to love the potential trade

lol
I say keep the IDI, cheaper, easier. Same power and longevity the psd has. I have an enormous amount of respect for the 7.3 psd, its a great engine. But it doesnt do anything better than the IDI. IDI is cheaper/ easier/ simpler to work on.
Add a decent turbo pump and injectors to a stock NA IDI and it will walk any stock OBS powerstroke any day of the week.
Add a good turbo, intercooler, pump, and injectors and it will walk most modified 7.3s and stock 6.0s if not 6.6's and 6.7's
Btw, you can a pump for the idi that has shown 350whp and all 8 matched injectors cheaper than you can a HPOP

I had a 1995 F-350 Powerstroke that I loved and should have never parted with and I currently have a 2004 F-350 with 6.0L Powerstroke and I shouldn't have to say more.
If I sell my current truck and get a GMC this will be the first time I've not had a Ford in the driveway for 25 years.
