1988 f150 broken transfer case
Hey guys I recently created my account because this web site seems to have the best information on ford trucks I have found. I recently sold my 76 f250 high boy and got a 1988 f150 with the 300 straight 6 it's got the Borg waner 4 speed manual, my question is how do I find out what transfer case I have? I was working at my grandparents over the weekend and had my truck in 4 wheel drive most the day (I never went over 10mph) at the end of the day I put my truck in neutral and pushed the shift lever back into 2wd. It made a loud pop and went into 2wd but it won't shif now. I pulled it up on some ramps and crawled under the truck, it appears I auctily broke the transfer case, right where the shift linkage pivots. It also looks like the previous owner had this happen and tried to fix it with JB-Weld. Is there any stronger units I can get that will bolt right up? In only 17 and working on an extreamly tight budget so expensive solutions are not going to wor. I'm going to my local junk yard soon to see if I can find a T-case but first I need to know how to identify the one I got. Any information is greatly appreciated.

FYI, the BW 1356 should have a tag on the back of it to ID it. The same transfer case was used in the F350's... should be strong enough, so if money is tight, just find one that matches it and bolt it up. Some are manual shift, some electronic, there are slip yoke outputs and fixed yoke, then you need to make sure it has a speedometer drive if your truck requires one.

If I went to a np205 wouldn't I have to change the mounts possibly get an adaptor plate? And after all that I would have to come up with a different way to mount all the shift linkage. I like the idea but it sounds like a ton of work. My high boy had the np205 and it was a great unit but the size difference looks significantly larger. I have to drive my truck every day to school, and drive it to where ever I'm working also.

If it's your daily driver, then just go for a straight swap. Less down time.
If you're going to modify your truck, get another one to drive while you tear stuff apart. Even if you don't drive it regularly, you'll be glad you have it when you got your other truck torn apart and have to get to work.

No new mounts or adapter plates needed. Just bolt the transmission to the t-case and fab up some new driveshafts. That being said, sticking with the Borg Warner will be much simpler and should hold up to all the abuse you can throw at it as long as it is in good mechanical shape.
There are a few guys around that I see at haspin every now and then that even run 1356 doublers, and they are holding up well behind a healthy 460 and a built 408w.

Alright cool. I went to the junk yard yesterday in the pooring down rain and found multipul trucks with the same t-cases. The yard runner told me 200 bucks for a good unit, does that sound like a fair price? I was also wondering what I could do to give her a little more hp (without regearing it) because im getting a set of 32's this weekend for 10 bucks (the tires on my truck have about 10% tred left) I have herd of people swapping heads to a 240 head with Chevy rockers. But I have the fuel injected 300. Any info would be awsome.

another question i have is if the 5 speed tranny would bolt up to the engine and t-case i have. im getting a set of 32 inch mud tires from a buddy after school. i was thinking that by going to a slightly larger tire it might give me a little better gas mileage (depending on how i drive) and was also wondering if i swaped to the 5 speed tranny if i could get any better gas mileage in 5th cruising down the highway. does this sound logical to any one besides myself? any one know off the top of there head what tranny i would need?
