Gas Leak!!

Ugh.. another set-back.. the Ford Dealership just fixed the sending unit in my 88 Aerostar.. to the tune of (a lot)!! It's nice to see how much gas I have... but I looked under the van today.. and gas is coming from the top of the tank (I did just fill up)!! Any ideas before I head back to the dealership??

I would complain to the dealer, since they did just charge a lot of money doing work in that area. Do it soon, so they have less denyability.

Recently someone posted his work replacing a fuel pump:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...nt-1997-a.html

so you can see all the parts involved, and all the places where leaks can occur if you didn't put it together properly.

It's definitely going back!! Just didn't know if anyone had any ideas.. the gas was running down the back drivers side of the tank.. I guess that's what I get for trying to restore one of these old rigs.. every "oddity" that someone has I have run accross too! LOL

maybe they forgot to tighten the filler tube & hose on the side? if leaking from the TOP of the tank, then they either missed the pump seal or forgot to tighten the mounting. These people are under time constraints, they're pushed to their limits, quotas, you name it. Just remind them to raise the vehicle properly using the jacking points so they don't damage your rocker panels!

I know where there's a number of used Aerostar fuel tanks, so replacements are available.

I bet they forgot to tighten the filler hose and drain back line clamps down. Unless he was stupid and never tighten the pump assembly down.

Well.. looks like I'll have to keep an eye on it.. the dealer didn't find a leak.. they filled the van back up and drove it around for a while.. put it on the rack.. and no leak!!?!? My only guess is that they tightened up something while they were under there and didn't want to tell me lol

That's what I'm leaning towards!! I still get a mist on my liftgate.. I crawled under the van.. and the front of the gas tank has fluid on it.. I'm thinking is transmission fluid.. there is a small leak at the shift shaft.. but it doesn't leave any spots on the ground.. and when I wiped it off the back of the van it's not greasy like oil would be.. I guess the next stop is the transmission place lol... I checked the fluid.. it's not low..

Check your coolant lines and power steering for leaks. I had a power steering leak coming out the driver side inner tie rod boot once. The seal on that side had a tiny leak and was misting all over the right side under it. put some lucas power steering fluid in it and it stopped.
