Hi! I realize ours is a little older than a '97, but still hoping you'll have advice!
We have a '95 E150 with about 110k on it, and just discovered we have a leak in the gas tank? I went to fill it, and in the space between the frame and the gas tank sleeve, there was a running drip of gas down the inside of the frame, dripping into a growing puddle underneath.
Hoping desperately it was the pump and not the van, I tried again at another gas station -- same result!! It doesn't leak any other time, just when the pump nozzle is trying to fill it!
Any hints, advice, suggestions from the pros??? All would be appreciated!!
We have a used 2001 E150. I was searching for any recalls and found this 3/2001 recall due to potential gas leaks . Not sure about other years, but check it out in case this describes your problem. If so, I would see if it would be covered despite the year of your E150.

Thanks for all the advice!!! I checked with Ford on the recall, but it didn't cover our '95. Thankfully the problem turned out to be a crack in the filler hose rather than the tank itself! My checkbook is grateful!
Thanks again for the ideas and advice! I appreciate it!
I have a '97 E150 with an Explorer conversion package on it.
I took it in because it smells of raw gas, worse after a fill up and my service tech told me the tank is wet on top and he suspects that it is cracked.
I called a Ford dealer and was told the recall does not apply to my van??
They also told me the tank was about $400 + laobr to replace.
I filled out a complaint on the NHTSA web site today, we'll see what happens.
The recall applies to certain 1997 through 2001 model year E-150 wagons and E-350 wagons equipped with 159 Litre (35 gallon) mid-ship fuel tanks and built at the Lorain Assembly Plant from April 9, 1996 through November 14, 2000.
