Gas Tank Spill
Hey guys help me out here!!I have a 94 Ranger 2.3liter regular bed 5spd, and my Q is:
I overfill the gas tank last time, trying to top the last .50c into the tank, and
sh.t happened!!, gas was running from under the truck till stop, I noticed
that a good amount of gas was cumming from the top of the gas tank,
is this a normal way to discharge the fuel when it's overfill????,it was a scary
sight to see all that gas running on the floor at the gas pump, but suddenly
it's stop, isn't the gas supposed to spill at the nozzle when too full??
This is the first time that happened to me, I was going on a long trip.
Anyway, someone please tell me what's really going on here. Thanks....
On my truck the evaporative emissions control, or evap system, consists of a pcv like valve in the top of the gas tank that leads to a filtering canister to prevent gas vapors from being emitted into the atmosphere. That valve on top of the tank has a rubber seal, if your truck has this it is likely were your leak came from. You filled the tank to the brim and the eccess spilled out from this hole in top. You should be ok, just don't overfill your tank.
filler neck hose cracked
more likely.I found plenty of info suggesting that there is a common problem with it,
called two different dealerships and they told me the same, the hose it's
not cheap Ford parts dept qouted me $280
for the hose only,I called FORD MOTOR CO. main office to file a complaint, because I feel
that this is a bad design and a safety issue, who knows how many 90s
Rangers out there are having this problem, I smelled gas all the time, and
when I fill the tank full, about 1/4to 1/2 gallon will drop on the floor, not
a good sight, this safety issue should be taking care by the manufacturer
not the consumer, $280 for about the size of a rubber radiator hose.
Anyone interested in file a complaint with FORD MOTOR CO. can call
at this # 1-800-392-3673, it's toll free and only takes a minute to file,
at this time there is not a recall on this matter, I already filled a complaint
and they toll me that will investigate the problem according to the amount
of complaints.

When I called, after all the questionary, they told me to have it fix,
and pay for it, if they recall those trucks, they will refund your money,
till then you're screw.
, so do the math $280 + 150 ?? labor maybe?.I think the gas tank must come down in order to get access to the top
of the tank, it's so hard to see the hose end on the gas tank, you need
a flash light and a swivel mirror, DO NOT USE A HOT LAMP OR ANY HALLOGEN
SPOT LIGHT IT CAN BE DANGEROUS IF THERE'S A GAS LEAK
BEVERY CAREFULL!!!!

That sounds like a really good idea !!I guess you need an extra hand, remove the start bolts, tail gate and lift
it up, remove the hose at the noozle, disconect the electrical wires 4 tail
gate and back up light and license plate, I'm I forgetting something here ??
keep me updated, to see how it goes, I rather work from the top of the
truck, is yours a 94??.
To remove the tank you have to empty it first the best u can, loose the clamp
that holds the tank first, just to lower it enough so there is room to get to the hose area, my guess??

I think thats what I did on my 86. I just replaced the valve cover on my 94 ranger, so I am going to put off the filler neck problem until I get more truck money.
Something like this should be a recall.
$140 it's better than Ford quoted me $280 you install it!!.
Still it's too expensive, my 94 Ranger runs and looks GREAT,
blue book listed $ 1800 +, and for those not mechanic inclined,
Ford part $$$+ labor $$; It's a safety issue they should take care
of the problem, the filler neck it's a bad design in my opinion and if
it wasn't a bad design they should sell the hose at resonable price
like any other routine maintenance parts, like radiator hoses etc....
I bought a used hose from the junkyard.. the middle was 2 inches too short.. I bought a 6 inch piece of 2" copper tubing, formed it to the shape of the hose, then clamped it together... It not only elongates the hose, but helps releive the pressure on the tank where the hose cracked... just thought I would let you know... No problems with it yet... Oh, just take the bed off to get at it... its MUCH easier! lol...
