oil temp?

I have a 12 cc 4x4 drw. I hauled a bull and a cow about 100 miles this morning. I was pullling approx 6k including the trailer. The temp was about 75*. 50-60 miles into the trip I switched to the oil temp screen and the oil temp was 224* and the trannie was 199*. I was going into the wind which was about 20 mph, and I was traveling 75mph. The truck never lugged down heck it never shifted out of 6th gear. When I unloaded the cattle the temp came back down around 190*. Headed home and the temp got up to 226* and the tranni went to 205*. This was going with the wind and just the trailer. I am using oem 10w-30 motorcraft and motorcraft filters. The truck just has 9k miles on it. I am thinking that the oil temp is a little warm, should I be worried. What should I look for to diagnose. I like to do my own diagnosing if I can, the dealers around me can't find anything wrong even if you point the leak out to them. Should I be using a different oil?

I've seen my oil temp reach 242° when I'm towing up grades. But usually its more in the 200-210° range if the truck is not working.

I suspect it is working just a little harder with your trailer hooked. The engineers have reported back that the 242° was within normal range and not to worry about temps getting that high.

The 6.7L engine uses the oil to help cool then engine. It sprays jets of oil into the underside of the piston and has a Oil cooler where it exchanges heat with the coolant system.

I just pulled my 12k high profile 5th wheel camper thru eastern Pa on I-84 at 65 mph and with several checks the highest temp I saw on the hills was 210. To me the 242 seems to be high. My last oil change was last week and the dealer used 10-30.

I agree with painted horse on the oil temperature . I have seen mine when pulling 11,000 pound 5th wheel up a steep climb reach near 240 degrees many times. It is usually on a hot day and the temp comes down fast when I top the hill.

I routinely see 242 degrees and more. My truck and 5er weigh in over 27000#. The highest I've seen is 248. The tranny temp is usually 215-220 when the EOT is that high. I don't get too excited about it. The aux fans come on right around 242, so I figure I'm not hurting too much. My Duramax aux fans used to come on all the time. A lot more than they do on this truck. I use the Motorcraft 10w30 oil year round. I had my tranny fluid changed at around 25,000 miles and it looked and smelled like new. I change my oil every 5,000 mile.

My truck hit an oil temp of 226 empty and I took it into the dealer, the tech said that he hadn't dealt with high oil temps yet so he called Ford. The "guy" at Ford told us that the expected operating oil temp is anywhere from 199 to 249 (although the guy on the phone did say that the engineers believe that a temp up to 255 would be okay). He also said that there hasn't been enough data, aka breakdowns with trouble codes, for them to know at what temprature we need to start worrying. He finally said that as long as there aren't any trouble codes produced or engine problems observed then don't be too concerned.

While that didn't make me feel too secure (them not being able to say what a "normal operating" oil temprature should be) I can tell you that after I had TSB 12-6-5 done, my oil temprature hasn't gotten above 214. I am not a mechanic and this is my first diesel so I am only passing along what I was told and not validating the info provided.

Best Regards,

Randy

I'm not getting to worried yet but on any other vehicle those kinda "normal" temps would be cooking, so y is this truck any difference is what I wana know. Plus I've heard b4 that oil will breakdown fast at those temps, ask the 7.3 forum how hot there tranny's get , most will say they will pull over or stop driving if they saw 220

I'm new to the 6.7 but have been driving big rigs all my life. Oil temps in the 220's sound normal, even 240's under hard pulling. It seems thees newer diesels run a bit hotter than the old ones.

TFT is different than EOT. you are correct...TFT should be less than 220....since our trucks (6.7's) trans. are water cooled they seem to run in the high 190's to low 200's for the tranny temp. i have seen about 225 for EOT pulling the camper thru Tenn.

with my old 7.3 it was about the same....one of the last times i used it was to pull the camper to disney this past spring....EOT temps bounced between 220-225.

It doesn't sound like you have a problem.

If you did though, it would most likely be the oil cooler, and it's not the oil side that causes issues, it is the coolant side that develops an oxidized surface, and becomes poor at transferring heat into the coolant.

Thats what I hear anyways,

Drove out West from mid July thru mid Sept. Put on just under 8,500 miles. Highest outside temp was 110, pulled a 10,500 lb trailer. Used 5-40 oil, oil temp usually around 204/208, up the mountains temp was up to 230/235. No problems with the truck, water temp normal, exhaust brake worked fine, burned over 650 gals of fuel. Truck was 2011, F350 CC, SRW.

I've hit 247 oil and 233 tranny out here in NM.

The dealer changes the oil and uses 10w-30, my change oil warning comes on at about 7300m, which for me is about 8 months of driving.

According to the Diesel Engine Supplement, none of the suggested oil weights have any upper limits.

In the past I have tried various synthetics, like Rotella and AMSOIL in my diesel Super Duty trucks, the 7.3 and the 6.0 and 6.4 I've had.

I have never seen even the slightest change up or down in MPG.

So, I just use the stuff the dealer puts in. Truck runs great regardless.
