It is entirely up to you. I have installed several aftermarket re-manufactured ford pumps in various vehicles with no issues whatsoever. I would say that since we rely on the power steering for our brakes it might be worth it to just pick up a new ford unit. It is kind of important to have brakes.... If the price is just too much to swallow than I would recommend A-1 Cardone. I used to sell lots of their PS pumps, water pumps, and brake parts and we had very few returns for bad ones or warranty claims. Just avoid the cheapies at the big chain stores. You will have problems with them and their cheap internals.

I would flush it first, it is cheap and easy to do.
I ended up replacing mine since the pump was weak, after I replaced it the new pump had enough pressure to blow the line from the pump to the hydro boost. I got a rebuilt one from Autozone, it works just fine. Reminder that you DO NOT use power steering fluid in there, only put ATF.
When I first got my truck I was told incorrectly and put it in there. It started whining even louder and I am sure was what took out the pump. It had so many leaks that I was using a quart of ATF a month before I replaced it. You will need the puller and installer tools, to remove and install the pully. Make sure to rent the right one it makes the job really easy.

I have always liked the Saginaw pump design but I haven't seen any write up's of guys using them on these trucks. I heard of guys talking about using them but haven't seen it. The stock pump design is weak in my opinion with the plastic housing and all. And if I ever have to replace mine to just keep it simple I'll install a new one and hope and pray it lasts at least 10-15 yrs like the OEM one has.
