I have a 2008 & 2009 Escape 4WD V6 that isn't a problem getting 31.9mpg on a 438 mile trip on either-
my sister has a 2013 Forester- she won't bet money she can follow me and get as good as mileage
what is your majic

Lol, the Forester I have has the 2.5i FB25 Boxer engine. Not sure, but I think it develops about 175 HP.
The biggest reason teh Foresters are getting great MPG is the new CVT transmission. Some people say it has some quirks, but mine seems to be fine.
That 30.3 mpg I am getting is rural driving, not highway, not city, but country road driving, normally 35 to 50 mph.
All is not rosy over in Subaru land though. Some 2.5i engines from 2011 to present use oil and Subaru can't figure out why. I have read it has something to do with the rings seating properly during break-in, but that is only a guess by some. Luckily, mine so far is not using any oil after 7500 miles.
Like I said, gas mileage is great, yada yada yada, but still, it's not a Ford and you get what you pay for.

We just got a new cx9 but looked at both the forester and outback. I really liked the outback. It was the 2.5 with appearance package and eye drive (adaptive cruise and auto brakes) - really cool car! Fun to drive!
Didn't even test the escape this time around, we wanted something quieter.

you realize the term is so vague- do you know what you are saying
my OD kicks in at 46.1mph- I can pick- RURAL- and drive forever- my UG shows 42.8mpg on RURAL road- sometimes 49.6mpg
take your forester out on the highway- drive at "highway speed" {you tell us what you think Highway Speed means}
I play it right- I can get 58.7mpg-
we have 40 to 60 mph winds-
I don't talk mpg with big tail winds--- but- I don't blow smoke either
realistic numbers please- if you have majic- tell about it

Yes I absolutely know what I am saying. Nothing vague about RURAL DRIVING. I live and drive in a rural area. Sooo, it's not city driving and it's not highway driving. We have plenty of hills here in Northwest Jersey also. My average speed is between 35 and 50 miles mph. You tell me what is so vague about that.

I'm afraid that I'm in the minority with my 2014 2.5L engine. We love it. If I wanted a more powerful engine, I would have considered another engine. Quite a profound statement I know... Anyway, three trips from Key West to Jacksonville averaged 31 mpg with less than 3K on the clock. Regular gas, A/C on and not fully loaded. I don't drive as fast as I used to. I-95 speeds are set at 72MPH and the Keys have a 45MPH speed limit which means that I am at about 48 or 49MPH. The cruise control works well and I enjoy messing with the trip computers. I'm a "late adaptor" so at first I thought that all of the new fangled digital stuff was overkill, but I now enjoy using it and hope to use it to my advantage.
