Question High mileage overhaul

What is the general rule or past experience of when these engines might need some sort of overhaul?

For longterm life expectancy is there a time when bearing journals, lifters, or any other items I'm not even thinking about should be considered for replacement?

Thanks.

there are some here that are over 500K and have only done top end stuff I think

Run6.0RUN is the member Im refering to I know most of his miles are Freeway so FWIW

Usually in a gasser the valve guides wear and start sucking oil at 200-250K But these Diesel seem so Bullet proof especialy in the Bottom End

How many miles do you have stacked up Colm???? 300K yet???? I think you just got it Broke In

Run6.0run I'd say is the exception. I think he posted that he once did 10 days without shutting her off.

I'm usually doing 800 - 1,000 miles +/- each week. With summer and fall being high and winter and spring usually less. About 35k to 40k per year depending on business.
I'm 30% low speed limit roads and 70% highway I'd say.
I probably use the starter about 5 -6 times each working day with the stops I make.

So right now I'm at 260k miles. I need a new HPOP, a new oil pan, I have a leaking seal at drivers side rocker arm carrier and a leak at CMP sensor.
The harness is getting old. Everything feels brittle and in a few areas I've repaired it. IPR pigtail is repaired. ICP pigtail is replaced. FICM tabs are broken. While the top is apart I may as well do a VC-9 flush myself first and then add a new oil cooler to the list.

I would love to do the work myself but I don't have the time and I need the truck to make a living .... so I'll have to pay someone to do it. I have the calculator out at the moment and I'm trying to make the right decision about the upcoming repairs.
I don't want to do all the repairs mentioned above and then have something major go wrong in 12 months time when I'll be at about 300k miles.

its a tuff call. IMO if I was worried I would start looking for a low milage used engine to drop in. and drive what you have till it dies.
