freeze plug

question, has anyone changed out a freeze plug with the engine still in the truck? I thought I had blown head gasket, but appears to be a freeze plug so need to know if it is possible to reach driver side forward plug through the wheel well? Is it up behind the motor mount or just where is it at as far as getting to it?

Thanks Hank

forgot, its a 94 4.0.

I removed one on the passenger side to install a block heater. Plenty of access over the top of the frame rail. I don't know if you would be so lucky on the left side.

Ok found the real culprit, its the gasket on the timing cover water gallery! leaks out that why no water in oil etc. Anyhow gonna take it down to a shop monday and see what they will charge to replace the gasket and timing chain etc while its apart. It will take them 2 days at most, me 2 weeks working on it part time.

BTW, can barely see the freeze plugs from the wheel well with the tire off!

Yes, there is a lot of stuff in the way on the left side. Pretty wide open on the right side.
