play in steering

Octaneforce,
No, the rag joint is a disc of fabric reinforced rubber (like a tire sidewall) just in front of the steering box.
It should have a plastic cover on it.
The telescoping shaft is under the hood too.
You will see where it slips into itself.(To protect the driver from being speared in the event of a collision)
There is a flat spring steel clip and a plastic (Delrin) bushing inside the larger portion of the steering shaft.
My truck is getting ready to replace the upper and lower bearings in the column.

wow im way off. that u joint needs replacement regardless, however if im gonna tear it apart ill do the rag joint and the bushing too. where can i get the steel clip and the delrin bushing? also, i cant find a rag joint with my model listed. they are all just different sizes. the borgeson rag joints seem to be the way to go if i can figure out which one i need.

no. your 92 does not have the telescoping column we are talking about. that is a 91 and older thing.

also, i don't think you have a rag joint either. if i remember correctly, the 92 and newer trucks have a universal at the steering box connection.

how does this thing even come off? anyway, the whole steering shaft has play. every connection seems to have some amount of wiggle, i think theres even a little play where it enters the steering box. what i would like to do is replace everything i can in the steering shaft and if its still a loose mess ill replace the steering box.

Thats the one you need. Theres 1 bolt at each end, the box shaft is something like a D so the shaft bolt goes against the flat spot of the box shaft, same with the upper, bolt goes against flat spot. Make sure ur front wheels are straight before you pull it apart, compress steering shaft to fit between box an firewall shaft, put the bolts onto shafts in the right positions. Put on plastic rag joint cover. Check steering wheel to see if iits sitting the way you want, if its not, pull the screws on back of steering wheel, remove center cover carefully, if u have cruise control, unscrew center nut, use a gear puller or soft hammer to bang steering wheel off shaft, reangle steering wheel, an put it all back together.
