Depending on ambient air temperature is how long the light will remain on before you start the truck. The fact that it starts quickly is a good thing, means your truck is in overall good health.
Mine stays on for 3 - 4 seconds with a cold start, first start of the day, and for 1-2 seconds for warm/hot starts. Yours sound exactly the same as mine. I am told that the glow plugs stay on a lot longer than the light, for emission control reasons.
ok. well heres my issue im havin. my dumb *** got a dui 2 weeks ago. blew .004 over the limit. i had 2 girls and a friend with me. as i walked away in cuffs he was told to take the truck home which was ok with me. but he didnt wait to start. think he did damage.
The glow plugs stay hot for about 2 minutes after the light goes out. Partly to help with emissions, but more importantly to help the engine burn the fuel until it's warm enough to burn/combust on it's own. Diesel engines run on compression & heat. The engine needs the help from the glow plugs to burn the fuel until there is enough heat in the block for the fuel to burn on it's own. Another reason good healthy batteries are a must for the 6.0L engines.
As far as your buddy doing damage to the engine, I doubt it. Especially if y'all had been out driving around for a while, the engine block is made of cast iron. The engine holds heat for quite a while after it's shut down.
The glow plugs just make it easier to start, and less emissions after it starts. Lot's of diesel engines don't have glow plugs and just start from compression heat. No possibility of damage if the truck started.
