Question Wait to start light?

How long does your "wait to start" light stay on? I am wondering if everything is ok with mine. On mornings at 30 degrees it stays on for 6 or 7 seconds and truck will start ok. This morning at 15 degrees, it still only stayed on for these 6 or 7 seconds and the truck did start ok. Shouldn't it stay on longer the colder it is? This is on my 03 and with the engine not plugged in. What does your Super Duty "wait to start" light do on cold, cold mornings????

Mine seems to run the same most of the time too, maybe there is a minimum amount of time that it stays on, and will only stay on longer if needed?

Even though the light goes out, the glow plugs still stay on. I read somewhere that they stay on for up to 2 min. On cold mornings without a plug in, I usually wait 10-15 seconds after the light goes off to start to let more heat build up.

the light is programed to come on for a preset time. you do not have to wait to start your engine ( your owners manual tells you this). what i'm saying is, it's not going to hurt a thing! if it doesn't start right up, then turn the key off and back on to reset and then give it a little time to heat the glow plugs. the pcm will turn the glow plugs on and off as it sees fit. these engines will start right up with temps in the 20's without waiting to start. of course as they get older, they will need that extra time. as the saying goes, " kick the tires and LIGHT THE FIRES ! ".

Maybe it's my imagination, but my light seems to stay on longer when it's cold.

yep it does... i think that it may have a "preset paramater" for example it will only stay on between 1-10 sec.... Example... this mourning it was a chilly 10F out and the light stayed on for about 8-10 sec.... drove around and had to make a stop at Dunkie's to pick up some coffiee... (and the lady in the speaker box cant hear **** if your motor is running!!) shut her down for a sec.... turned the key back to on and the light was on for about 1 sec... cause the eng was all warmed up already...

Trackman....Yea it cold here too.... This mournin' it was maby 10ish out and i just left the key in the "on" position for an extra 5-6 sec after the light went out... started right up!

Mine seems to stay on longer for the first start of a cold day (below freezing) then on other starts it isn't on as long. I just get in, turn the key to on, then put on my seat belt and it is usually off by then. Starts right up.
