Leaking HPOP

My truck has been leaving it's mark in my driveway for a while now.
Big trip coming up in 6 weeks. So I started to clean and dig, found out the HPOP is leaking against the engine. Pretty sure it's the gasket against the block that is leaking. Question is , should I rebuild the entire pump while it's out ? And what else should be done while I have the pump out ? I plan on buying the parts at dieselorings.com

Truck is an excursion 7.3 with 149,000 miles on it

Thanks for any tips

Yes I would replace all the O-rings in the pump along with the "non-serviceable" plug and rebuild your fuel bowl that is what I did when I took mine out. Also make sure that before you put your pump back to clean where the gasket sits so it makes a good seal. (that is the one step I forgot to do and know I have to pull everything out again)

Backing up the bus a bit... the EBP sensor is on a plate in front of the HPOP. If you turn a wrench on this without a wrench on the other side to counter the force, you will bend the plate. The plate does not have an O-ring, it is RTV'd in place - I'd first double-check to make sure this isn't your culprit.

Tugly, thanks for the idea, but I am a little confused, saw your link and still don't follow.
I can feel under the pump and where it's leaking at it's end !
Are you saying there is a plate its mounted on or ?

Thanks for your help

Nope, the plate he's referring to is in front of the HPOP reservoir and slightly below it. Its a plate with an attached bracket that is supports the EBP sensor, with the EBP tube running below it down the front of the engine.

X2 on rebuilding the entire HPOP while you've got it off. Unless you've already done it, go ahead and rebuild the fuel bowl too...the entire kit is pretty inexpensive from dieselorings and you're already going to have the whole fuel bowl pulled. It shouldn't take you more than an extra hour of work. And that's some major insurance against future leaks, because all those seals will end up leaking eventually.

The link I posted is the procedure I followed when I replaced my HPOP. I thought that might be useful to you.

So Tugly,

I printed and read that link.
What I don't understand , is how that plate could be "the culprit" ?

Thanks

I'm not saying that is your issue, I just mentioned it was worth a look because it covers the HPOP drive - plenty of oil splashing around in there. One member had an oil leak and discovered his was bent out. His fix was to remove it, straighten it, and re-seal it - problem solved.

Sometimes a member will say I have XYZ problem and many of us who have run into the same problem suggest the same cure they used. Issues that pop up like prairie dogs frequently have more than one possible answer, so I just do my thing of offering up the alternative possibilities.

Ahhh Ok,

I didn't understand , how this was sealed to the HPOP and still DO NOT, but I will have a closer look to try and see.

What needs to be removed to pull this plate ?

Thanks

I wouldn't pull it unless you need to pull the HPOP or repair the plate - it's sealed with an adhesive sealant. A light and an inspection camera or mirror will allow you to see the plate more clearly (just forward and below the HPOP reservoir, see figure 7 in the link I posted).

Anyhow, fuel bowl and hpop are now pulled , time to order parts

Hoses or pump? I bought the T500 pump from Clay at riffraffdiesel and it really did a great service to my truck. I have AE software and I logged before/after results.
