2013 FX4 Ordered
- Oxford White
- 6.5 foot bed
- Super Cab
- 5.0 V8
- 402A Equipment Group (Luxury)
- Navigation
Prices:
- FX4 - $38,765 (Invoice $35,179)
- 402A - $5,420 (Invoice $4,621)
- Navigation - $795 (Invoice $678)
- Total Out the door price everything included - $39,458.31
A few notes about this. The 402A equipment group is required in order to order Navigation. This group includes HID headlights, heated/cooled leather seats, rearview camera, reverse sensing , ... I really wanted just Navigation, but had to get 402A. I declined the Moon roof for an additional $500.
Roughly speaking, I got the truck for $2000 under invoice. I felt like it was an OK deal and I am satisfied with it. I didn't try reducing it any more than this. It may have been possible, but I don't like getting into unpleasant interactions. It was fair enough as it.
Buyer Be Ware
The first dealer I went to quoted me the following:
- FX4 - $47,455 (Invoice $43,702)
I believe he was lying to me. Ford hasn't published prices yet, but based on information from other dealers, he was lying. To top that off, he gave me a talk about if I wanted ethical honest dealings, I'd have to deal with him! He said that the other dealers would cheat me out of money. When I said $40,000 flat for the vehicle he gave me his number and said he'd go as low as $43,000. Keep in mind, this is exactly the same optioned vehicle.
Additional Rambling:
I've been running into the attitude that dealers won't work on a good deal for you if you don't buy off the lot. If you want to order from the factory (exactly as you want it), you'll pay more. That may be partially true, but based on my experience, I'd say dealers (at least one) will work with you on a decent price even if you are ordering from the factory.
The package pricing was changed. In 2012 the FX Luxury package was $2,325 and the Navigation was $2,470 (total of $4795). Now the Luxury package is $5,420 and the Navigation is $795 (total $6,215). Not sure this is a valid comparison, since 2013 Luxury package is different from that of 2012.
In my opinion, these prices are somewhat nonsense since you aren't expected to pay them. Instead it is like a game where the dealer can say here is the price (and you are in disbelief) and then he says I am going to give you a deal and drop the prices $4000. What a great guy! Thanks! In the end, all that matters is what the final price is. So option your vehicle as you like and see what you can get it for. When you are done it is tough to say what you paid for Navigation.
When I said I was $2000 under invoice, the math above doesn't add up. The reason is that in addition to what I listed, there were also the following charges:
Fuel Charge: $134.28
ADV Assessment: $660.00
Dest and Delivery: $995.00
These were a part of the original price. So I am over $2000 under the entire Invoice price plus the above charges.

I'm with you on ordering, the salesman I was working with told me, people think you pay more but you don't, they would like to sell you something off their lot, you might get a better deal if a truck has been sitting there long enough, I didn't want to settle for something I didn't want. Mine was real easy, XL heavy PL, 5.0 oxford white. At the time there was one on the east coast, they would'nt move on it with the dealer. We tried for a couple weeks looking for one, finally he told me I could just order one for the same price, took about 8 weeks.

Welcome to FTE Dave! New vehicle prices increase every year. I'm not sure that there's anymore to it than an increase in raw materials and package changes.
You did order quite early and the incentives on the 2013's haven't really come alive yet. In light of that, I'll say you did well.
Congrats sir.

I've called Ford a couple of times and each time I was told initial deliveries of 2013's would start from middle to late September. So I don't expect to have the truck until the October time frame. Patience isn't one of my virtues so it'll be a long wait. The Astronomy gear I get is the same way. I typically wait 3 or 4 months from order to receipt of the bigger purchases. So I am getting used to being on-hold.
I wasn't keen of getting a truck initially. I loved my Subaru, but I simply ran out of room and needed more carrying capacity. But now that I've gotten into making it happen, I am excited about getting it. I think it will be a life style change for a couple of different reasons.
Standing back from it all, the truck is almost going to be a camper. But not some huge vehicle. It will be reasonable is size and gas mileage.
One other random thought:
Off topic, but I thought I would mention it. I have participated in many Motorcycle forums, Camera forums, and Astronomy. Almost universally there is fighting within the threads. Just dumb aggressive, pointless fighting. But in the couple of truck forums that I've been a part of, this one included, I have seen almost zero fighting. What a refreshing change.
It would be easy to stereotype and predict that a pickup truck forum would be rowdy, with lots of ego bashing, but I haven't seen much of this.

- I will set it up with a cap so that I can sleep in the back. So if I am exploring, I don't have to worry about finding somewhere to sleep. I can just park and jump into the back. But not only that, I can carry whatever I want without any practical limits on weight or volume. So I could carry a generator and cooler for food if I wanted.
- From another angle, the truck will give me more confidence to do more serious wilderness exploring. These trucks are serious machines and with the package I am getting, not only will it be capable of going virtually anywhere with reliability, but I'll also have the benefit of Navigation. That was the reason for the more expensive FX4. But since I did have to get the FX4, I had to get all that other nice stuff ... hate it when that happens!
