VIN decoding for two F6 trucks

Hi all,

A friend and me bought ourselves a Ford truck to haul cars and small machines with, a 1955 F620 (though the title says 1956). It's equipped with the small 239 Y-block (EBV), 5 speed manual with OD, and a single speed rear axle. Sorry, no pictures yet.

We also came across a F600 chassis with steering/brakes/drivetrain, less engine. Might come in handy sometime, and we're considering buying it.

VIN on our truck:
F62V5CDX10442

VIN on chassis:
F60D60DX10263

I hope someone can decode these, or point me to a place where it's possible to do so. Having the most experience with GM-cars/trucks, I'm not that good with searching for info on Ford trucks I'm afraid. Looks like a great forum here, lots of info gathered so far.

Hope this helps, you have more letters than I can decipher!

Welcome aboard, looking forward to your pics.

Welcome to FTE

F62 = F600.

V = 239 2V (Y block).

5 = 1955.

C = Chester PA Assembly Plant.

DX =

10442 = 1955 Numerical Sequence of Assembly, the trucks specific serial number.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
F60 = F600.

D = 223 1V I-6.

6 = 1956.

0 = No such assembly plant code, it has to be a letter, but it's not an O. Look close, it's probably: D = Dallas TX Assembly Plant.

DX =

10263 = 1956 Numerical Sequence of Assembly, the trucks specific serial number.

The difference between the VIN series codes of F60 & F62 has to do with the GVWR, the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.

There is no Ford Truck Parts Catalog listing for DX. Were these trucks exported to Europe?

The US VIN for all 1948/80 trucks, 1961/80 Econolines, 1966/80 Bronco's contains 11 digits.

The Canadian VIN's for these vehicles after 1965 also contains 11 digits, decodes the same as US VIN's. Prior to 1966, Canadian VIN's are totally different.

Great info guys, thank you very much!

Yes, both trucks are here in Norway, in the northern part of Europe, sorry for not pointing that out in my first post. I think it´s pretty reasonable to assume that both trucks came to Europe from Canada, and that the "X" possibly has something to do with "export". The VIN for the chassis was given to me by the seller, so I haven´t seen it myself. The year and series are correct though, so I guess it can be trusted to be what the seller claims.

The decoding for our ´55 suggest that it´s still in it´s stock form regarding the engine. I´ll check the rating plate for info regarding the trans and rear, as well as the exterior color. A partial VIN is stamped onto the drivers side cylinder head, and fits to the full VIN of the truck.

The ´56 chassis has a transmission and 2-speed rear axle, and we wonder if this can be used on our ´55? Will the bellhousing bolt up to a Y-block, or can our bellhousing be swapped over? We have thought of using the chassis for adapting/mock-up for an engine swap, but haven´t decided on which engine yet. (Gas/diesel, Ford/Chevy/Cummins/Volvo). Or just a bigger Y-block, but they are hard to find here in Norway.

Pictures are coming, within a week or so. Thank you again, guys!

These trucks didn't come from Canada, as Canadian VIN's are totally different from US VIN's thru 1965.

Due to tariffs, Cars/Trucks assembled in Canada were only sold new in Canada thru 1967, when the tariffs were abolished.

Both these trucks were assembled in the US and so, were only sold new in the US.

Sorry for the delayed response, but at least I now have some pictures of the truck.

So the Canada trucks have completely different VINs, how can the "DX" be explained then? Other than that, and the misread "0", everything decoded makes sense. Thank you again for your help!

I took the truck for a little drive last week, after replacing the sunk float. It doesn't flood the carb anymore, but it still has problems. Runs nice at idle and low revs, but just looses all power when the rpms increase. Feels like the main circuit is blocked or something, that I'm driving it only on the idle circuits. And with the waterpump still leaking, I don't go very far with it.

How the Ford got home, hitching a ride on a Freightliner:

Finally got the bare '56 F600 chassis home this weekend, and have gotten a closer look at the VIN and the drivetrain. As expected, the VIN was read incorrectly by the seller. The right one:

F60D6CDX10263 so this one is made in Chester as well.

The rest is not much to brag about, a seized up T98A, but an electronic shift Eaton two-speed is nice to have. The steering box is worn out as well, but this chassis will serve well for adapting another engine/trans combo into the '55. Power steering would also be nice, we'll see. I still haven't seen a good solution for converting the F5+ trucks, only the small ones. Pictures later.
