Question 351W Oil filter adapter collar?

Between the block and a Fram PH2. And the 1.5 inch spacer adapter has 2 hoses that connect to the lower radiator hose/coolling system?

Anybody ever run into these before? They look like a problem just waiting to happen. Should i scrap it or clean it up and run it?

That is an oil cooler. It transfer the heat in the hot oil to the cooling system which then gets cooled in the radiator. In the winter it heats up the oil faster and that improves how the engine runs in cold weather.

Other then making sure that the hoses are in good shape there should be no issues with this unit. Ford installed tens of thousands of these on it's car and trucks over the years. I have one on my SVT Contour with 120K miles, no problems to date.

I have to run an external filter on the conversion I have going on - in this shot you can see the adapter fitting.

The downside is that if the hose fittings ever blow loose - all your oil will be gone in a flash

I'd stick with stock, if I was in your shoes. It sounds like a good idea

If you have doubts about the cleanliness of that oil cooler's internals,(as I did with the 95 351W I recently went thru) leave it off and screw an FL-1A filter in it's place, you will need to use a 5.0 lower hose in addition to the different filter too, to replace the shorter 5.8 lower hose. The block fitting behind the cooler has the std threads used with the FL-1A as opposed to the metric FL-820S threads on the outer end of the cooler
