Crap! Just my luck....

I sure hope this won't cause me any problems - but it was just plain bad luck.

We are from Austin, Texas and up visiting Grand Tetons (and eventually Yellowstone). I stopped last night leaving Jackson, WY to put fuel in my truck. I am a religious user of PM-22-A (Motorcraft Diesel Additive). Well, I opened my fuel door, then opened the tank cap. I then opened my half used bottle of PM-22-A. When I took the cap off a small round piece of what looked like brown paper (some type of seal for the top of the cap) flew off and into my diesel tank opening and down the fill hose. I watched it happen but was too slow to do anything about it. So now I have small round object in tank. CRAP! CRAP! CRAP!

I sure hope it won't cause any issues. Thoughts or suggestions?

Had something similar to that happen, my advice is time, it will probably do nothing but you always have the 1 in a million chance.

Depends on the size of the offending item.

If it happens to be large enough to not get through your pickup screen it should stay in the tank. If it is larger than than ten microns(0.0004 inch) it will be stopped by the primary fuel filter. If it's smaller than that but larger than 4 microns (0.0016 inch) it will be stopped by your secondary fuel filter. If it's smaller than that it's going into your cylinders to get burned with your fuel. But at that size it shouldn't hurt anything.

In a nutshell: I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks Tom (and every one else). The item was about the size a quarter and about 4 or 5 mils thick. I was thinking it was not worth worrying about, but you never know.

Seriously, Ford should not incude that stupid little seal in the PM-22-A bottle if it is going to fall out so easily.

Now - back to vacation!!!

Later,

Now on a serious note, after thinking this over...

The only chance something like this should be able to cause problems is if it obstructed a line or gummed up the pump. Your truck will alert you to this before any real damage is done with a "LOW FUEL PRESSURE" alert. If this happens it should be towed to a dealer, and I would expect the repair to cost a couple hundred bucks.

I think this is a one-in-a-thousand kind of thing, as there just isn't much chance that little disc will get picked up. So no worries, drive happy.

hasnt happened to me, but the standadyne bottles have a dime sized cardboard seal inside the caps that soften after the bottle is unsealed. It always falls out. Once almost went into my tank. I now pry the dang things out of the caps with my car keys before I use it the first time. I reuse the 16oz bottles filled from teh 1/2 gallon sized. I'm tempted to make some rubber seals for the caps, but am afraid they would eventually fall into the tank too.

Yeah, I've had that stupid little cardboard gasket fall out a couple of times. Now when I open a new bottle of PM22-A I just automatically scrap it out. With my kind of luck that little 1/2 cent POS would put me on the side of the road out in the sand dunes!

I've had that happen, too. On the farm, I have 2 fuel tanks outside ( no, people, it's tax-paid fuel!! ) that I fill up from and knowing what crawls up inside those nozzles at night, I have probably put frogs, bugs, grass, water, etc. in my tank on several occasions. No problems yet but I do change filters religiously.
