About the Air Intake
I have an 08 6.4 and it is tuned with an H&S Tuner. I don't really drive it very hard.
I was considering doing an air intake upgrade like a S&B cold air intake. Not really trying to achieve more HP but would like to see a little increase in fuel economy. I know the gains if any at all would be small or maybe even none at all.
I am wondering if on the stock set up for the 6.4....that it may already be sufficient enough and doesn't require an up grade. It seems like a pretty good system already in place. Opinions and experience please!
I just don't want to spend the money if I'm not really going to gain a little Milage with it..even a mile or so per gallon would be welcome.
On the S&B ..... Where does it get it's cooler air from..Is there some air duct that goes to the front of the truck or does it just get the air from the engine compartment. If it just draws in air from the engine compartment then where is the cooler air?
I stuck on the fence with money in my pocket but just don't want to do it for 0 gains.

The S&B sucks it from the fender, which in my opinion isn't great. aFe has a much better setup from a logical/functionality standpoint.
You're right on not NEEDING it as the stock one is sufficient if you're not running tunes over 175-200. Check your air filter gauge after getting on the throttle hard, if you're tripping it, and your filter is clean, upgrade.
I have the S&B but can't give you a comparison tuned with or without because I installed the same day. Not many people really say they've had an MPG increase from an intake. Usually just better engine performance & response.

You're just on a roll with starting new threads aren't ya!
I'm trying to find where I saw the DIY guide, but I removed the stock intake fender snorkel and eliminated the grille that was in it to open it up a bit...
So combine that with an intake (they're NOT cold air intakes) from either S&B or aFe and you'll be good to go.
One MPG on a vehicle that may average 13 or so MPG is a tremendous increase percentage wise, and expecting that from an intake is unrealistic.
The biggest benefit that an intake provides is lower EGTs in my opinion. Anything that lowers EGTs is good in my book, and even though a stock intake (or drop-in replacement filter) might do the job on a tuned truck, the 25, 50 degree or higher drop in EGTs you'll get by upgrading to a full intake is worth it. These trucks aren't gassers so there's really no "cool" sound to it so as long as you're NOT running a K&N or an intake that uses a K&N filter you'll experience very mild, perhaps almost immeasurable (alone, without the benefit of other supporting modifications) in HP, torque, mileage, decreased EGTs and quicker turbo spooling...

^^^ THIS! And that's why I modded the stock fender snorkel...kind of like a ZooDad mod on a 6.4!
