Pulled a heavy load now trannys dripping??

I have a 91 f150 with a 300 6 and an e4od tranny. Our 4610 ford tractor broke down in the field so i pulled it maybe 50 yds with my truck which wasnt easy but it did it.

Now my tranny is dripping at a decent pace it looks like from the hole in the bottom of the transmission, i drove about ten miles home and it still shifts fine

what could i have done??

Probably overheated it, these things operate on the ragged edge of meltdown just driving aroud the block. I'd suggest you go get the biggest trans oil cooler you can find and add a temp gauge to keep an eye on it.

Probably puked out the front pump seal a little. Pull that rubber plug out of the bellhousing, hose it out with some brake clean and see if it leaks anymore. If not, top it off and down the road you go. If it still leaks you'll be pulling the tranny to change that seal.

It's the converter seal, it looks like a wheel bearing seal but it's on the trans where the torque converter (TC) enters the trans. You cannot see it unless you remove the trans and the TC.

Good time to do a ZF5 swap IMO. You will thank me and so will your 300.

I did the ZF swap in my 96 F150 as part of a 4wd conversion, totally worth it. They're geared perfect for the way a 300 six makes its power. Also a far cry in every way from the M5OD it replaced. Anyhoo yes I would say you most likely overheated the trans as mentioned above. Keep an eye on it, see what happens... that's my best advice it this point.

Judging from your pic in your signature, that truck has worked pretty hard times before, it's probably not the first time it gets to hot, but that tractor did it in, and that seal must of gotten so hot, it harden, cracked and leaks now.

Since you have a shortbox F150, does it even have an Aux. tranny cooler?

My buddy did the same thing pulling round bales up a hill with his F250 with a 7.3. The hill is very steep and its probably a 1/2 mile distance from top to bottom. It only took 3 bales for both the front seal and the seal for the bottom pan to leak as fast as you could put fluid in. E4ODs aren't very good trannys for hard work. I don't know why Ford even bothered using them in anything.

Idk, from what I have seen the E4OD is a pretty tough trans. It probably just needs a extra cooler, where Ford should have put it on.
