Smile 1956 F100 Steering Column with Tilt

Hi, can we get your help? We need to replace our steering column and we were thinking of replacing it with a tilt.

Does anybody know what brand and year of column would fit without too much difficulty. Presently has Toyota Power Steering in it.

Is there a steering column with a 3 speed shifter on the culumn that would work?

Thank you

I used an Ididit paint grade column on mine. I don't know if they make a 3 speed version, mine was a floor shift model. I can't say I've ever seen a column stick shift tilt column on any vehicle, doesn't sound practical. The tilt feature is very nice, allows the use of a smaller diameter wheel and a more contemporary upright wheel position instead of the stock bus driver position.

Now that you mention it, my husband agrees with you, he doesn't recall hearing of a tilt with a 3 speed on the column. But, I had to ask. Now we know what route to go.

Thank you very much.

Ahha. A female enthusiast! The reason I installed the Toyota PS and tilt column was because at that time both my now ex wife and I were both going to be driving it. It has 6 way power captains chairs, but we still wanted the versatility of as much driving position customizing possible. We planned on using the truck to tow our race car trailer around the country so we wanted to be comfortable on long distance trips. We chose a 15 3/4" Grant leather rimmed wheel as a compromise between the big stock wheel and one that looked too small in the truck and would defeat the advantage the PS provided. That size allowed the wheel to sit more upright without ending up in your lap.
The ex wife has since moved on and took the trailer with her, but the truck stayed with me.

You got the truck, sounds like you got the better part of the deal. We bought the truck a couple years ago and the gear shift was a little sloppy and the horn doesn't work so my husband is going to change the steering column altogether. He is pretty sure he will put the gear shift on the floor, instead of switching over to an automatic, because we both like to drive manual.

We both love our old vehicles. He has the '56 Ford F100 and I have a '57 Nash Metropolitan.

Keep on driving.

Check out Flaming River. I have installed a column shift tilt from them on a 55. I think ididit has them for a columb shift also.

Seems to me fixing the horn and linkage bushings would be a lot cheaper and easier by far. For what it's worth I put a GM Tilt out of a 78 Monty Carlo in my 62 Uni. It was quite easy. An dirt cheap compared to the Ididit unit.

I love the column shift. Most everyone has bushings for them. They are fun to drive and my girl can snuggle right up to me.
