Slide In Bed Camper, thoughts?

My dad had a service station with a wrecker business when I was growing up in Colorado and sold the wrecker after a call he went on that involved a slide-in going off the side of the mountain. Took his wrecker and 2 others to retrieve it. Kids and family pet dead, mom and dad were in the cab and survived.
DO NOT put yourself or your family through that.

My ideal camper is a horse trailer with living quarters. I can use it for the horses and the toys. But they are out of my price range right now.
So I think the best alternative is a slide in bed camper. This way I can still use a bumper pull horse trailer or other trailer for toys.
Some of the campers hang out of the bed of the truck so I would need an extension on my tow hitch. That does not sound so good to me, lot more room for the trailer to sway back and forth. But I have never used one so I don't really know.
Does anyone have one of these? What are your thoughts on this? Tough to drive with? Top heavy? Too wide for a SRW?
Thanks!

My research was made many years ago but with the same conclusion.
But, there most be a form of communication between the trailer riders and the driver. With cell phone coverage these days being so good along most highways, you may not get harassed for this. But, I would have a set of 2-way radios as a backup.

Yes, it is.
Idaho State Police - Patrol FAQs
I will be traveling through Idaho pulling a camp trailer or 5th wheel trailer with my pickup truck. Is it legal to allow members of my family to ride in the camp trailer or 5th wheel while we are on the road?
Idaho code prohibits persons from riding in a manufactured home as it is being pulled down the highway. Persons may ride in the back of a pickup camper loaded on the back of a pickup truck.
Can my kids ride in the back of my pickup on our next trip?
Yes, there is no restriction in Idaho Code that prohibits anyone from riding in the back of a pickup truck.
I am traveling through Idaho with my camp trailer and boat. May I pull my boat behind my camp trailer in Idaho?
Yes. You may pull your boat behind your camp trailer as long as your overall length does not exceed 75 feet.

Me, too. I've always been impressed with Lance. I'd also like to get another travel trailer to replace my 1991 Wilderness 24M. I'm undecided if I should trade-in my 1991, or just keep it until it falls apart. Ideally, I would like to get both, a slide-in camper and another travel trailer.
