All sounds promising. I'd love to see more pictures of your project. If you want more information on the difference between the crash box and the synchro box, this thread is great: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...-question.html
wonder if it was born with a 254 flat six or the 215 ohv. the vin shows a 4 sync transmission but i havent been under it to check.
Not to pick nits here, but it's always good if we use the same, correct terminology on stuff. There's noting in the vin, or vehicle identification number, that shows anything about the transmission, but it does contain the engine code. The second line on the rating plate does identify the transmission, axle ratio(s), and paint color, but that is not a vin.
Now, to answer your question, the truck's vin does contain the engine code. From that you can determine which engine was originally installed at the factory. If the vin starts with F6D2, it's the 215. If it starts with F6M2, it's the 254. Chances are with the truck being an F6, and since you indicated the second line on the rating plate says "4SYN" in the trans code area, it's very likely the truck came with the 254 and T98 syncro 4 speed. That seemed to be a very popular and common package.
And just FYI, the next 2 letters in the vin indicate the assembly plant. If you want to post those, or the whole number, we can tell you more about your truck.
Looks to be a 60s 223. Also has battery tray on left side instead of the right confirms that it came with a 254 from the factory.
Ford didn't offer a large OHV 6 in 52 and retained the large flathead 6 after it eliminated the small 226 flathead 6 after the 51 model year.
sorry Wayne, i should have said data plate or vin tag. vin # is f6m2sp so that would mean born with the 254 flat six correct? anyway, still trying to sell the omaha standard bed and get some weight off the back. if that 223 runs it will be going in the MH F2, maybe nobody will notice.
