When to check for proper oil level

Recently I did an oil change over to synthetic and after warming up the engine and letting it sit a few minutes the level was in the middle of the hash marks on the dipstick. I cam out this morning and decided to check it cold and the level is at the max line.

When is it best to check the oil level?

With warm oil it takes approx. 20 min. to get a good reading on level ground.

I check mine at the end of time spent fueling. When I'm traveling.

Yep, so it's easily at the max line. Is this too much? I know these things are fickle about everything.

I have always checked all vehicles oil after sitting all night. I m sure a half hour would be plenty. Not sure if oil "expands" with heat.

I always check after it sits overnight. I slightly overfilled mine last time, its right above the max line. Its been about 2700 miles since that change, I'm gonna go ahead and do my next change at 3000 just to play it safe because it bugs me that I overfilled it.

A little overfilled isn't going to hurt anything. Is your stick bottomed out cause you have to be careful not to push it down to far, next thing you know your buying a new dipsticks cause it cracks at the top of the tube it goes into. I am on my third in 140k Km or 90k miles. A quart is the whole hash marks so as long as it's no higher than the whole set pf hashmarks, don't be so hard on yourself. Change in 5000 miles, or worst case drop a little carefully vcause that synthetic is expensive.

When I change my oil, I only get mine to as close to half way on the stick. Although, it really gets to just above. I do this to make sure I don't "make oil". Meaning, I don't have an issue with fuel going into the oil via an injector o-ring.

I have seen on here where folks have reported "making oil". This way, I know if I have an issue in these matters. If I gain oil, I have a problem. Best way to check is to leave it low. Hard to read level on the metal shaft.

Here is a thread on a person who has had this issue.

Talk to Benny,

He is one person I leave my oil low purposely.

Just sayin'
