transmission options for a 92 f-150

hello.. i have a chance to buy an 92 ford f-150 4x4 with a 302 engine and an automatic transmission. from what the owner has told me is that the transmission is not working and a replacement would cost roughl around 2,500 dollars just because it's supposted to be the first year of this transmission, because it's supposted to be completely comeputer controlled. so my question can another tranmssion work with this truck that's not computer controlled?

The only way to not have a computer controlled transmission is to swap it to a manual. That is alot of work. I would browse JY's near you for one. You want an E4OD. They shouldnt be that expensive used. Also check local classifieds. Lastly you can have the one you have looked at and rebuilt. that would be cheaper than a new one but still expensive. I have seen rebuilds go for around 1,500. I would expect it to cost at least 400-500 minimum to repair...

If the transmission is electronic controlled it would be an E4OD. 1992 was not the first year for them. Yes, they can be expensive to repair, but one step at a time. What makes the owner and you think the transmission is bad? It is 100% electronic controlled, many time a "bad transmission" is really a sensor issue. Ask the owner if you can run a code scan on it, it could turn out to be a very simple fix....

Another thing to consider is the owner has no clue what they are talking about in more ways than one. That truck could also have a mechanical AOD behind it. It uses a cable attached to the throttle (TV cable) to control the pressure inside the transmission. A mis-adjusted TV cable will kill an AOD.

I disagree with that first statement. The F150 w/5.0L engine could also have an AOD behind it from the factory. It is a mechanical transmission. You can swap one of those or the other option is to swap in a 3-speed C6. Either of those options are non-computer controlled automatic transmissions. The F250/350s could be ordered with a C6 until the end of this generation truck.

i was just going by what the owner told me. apparently it ran fine, then one day it pretty much just rolled to a stop. honstly i'm not really sure what's wrong with it. it seems like a really clean truck, that the owner wants to sell for a thousand dollars. just because he's sick of it in his yard. it's got a clean title. and i'm thinking about it. if i did but it, i was thinking about just putting in a manual transmission.

You could drop in a Zf5 manual trans or Mazda manual trans or, as rla says, drop in an AOD overdrive auto or the heavy duty non-overdrive C6 auto if the E4OD is too costly to repair.

i agree. I also thought that only the 460 could be ordered with the C6 in this generation

I have run across a few verified examples of trucks with 5.8L engines and the C6 in the mid to late 90's on this and a few other forums. Either way, it is rare.

A good friend of mine owns a spotless 96 F250 HD 4x4 SC LB with the 5.8/C6 combo. I think they were rare because most owners want the overdrive for highway use.
