Question Automatic conversion

I've got a '94 F150 5spd 4WD SC 302 and have been toying with the idea of swapping the stick shift out for an automatic E4OD (?). 5 speed is lame for towing and a pain with the kids on a trip. I have a number of unanswered questons:

Are the electronics 'on board' capable of handling this or is an electronic shifter required (eg a Baumannator TCS)?

I've read a lot of posts here about trans that slam and shift hard, is this restriicted to certain years?

Should I stick with the same model year?

Any and all points are appreciated!

Mike

The E4OD and 4R70W are controlled by the EEC (EFI computer), so if you use one of them, you'll need a replacement EEC. You can get a reman from Ford for $250 or from a parts store for as little as $180. You can find every part you might need at a junkyard, a parts store, or the dealership.

If you go to an AOD or C6, you won't need to make ANY wiring changes, other than the connector for the backup & neutral start switch. The AOD is controlled by the TV cable, and the C6 is controlled by vacuum & mechanical kickdown. The hardest part of those 2 options will probably be creating a linkage to connect the '92-96 auto shift cable to the transmission since they weren't used (AFAIK) in '92-96.

I have some leftover parts from converting an E4OD to an M5OD, so if you have trouble finding some, e-mail or PM me.

Thanks for the info.

If I was to choose an AOD or a C6 will they bolt up w/o much difficulty?

What is a 4R70W from? Which is better (4R70W E4OD) ? Better for me would be fuel economy. (If you new how much a gallon of go-go juice costs 'here' you'd puke. ) Sounds to me like you'd stay away from the electronically controlled units? Why?

Why'd you switch to a M5OD? I'm on the second one of those and they same thing is happening again (at almst exeactly the same time 30,000 miles) - finding 3rd grear grinds (3rd grear syncros start to go). Dealer picked up the first one and I don't want another on my tab. I've got posi lube in with the ATF right now and that has solved the problem but who knows how long it will last or what new problems it will create!

Thanks again

Mike

I have a 93 F-150 4WD with 351W stroker and AOD. It originally had a 302. My two cents follows:

1) If you go to an automatic you will have to get all the hardware for the shift lever and install on your steering column including the shift cable.
2) You have four choices of automatic trans:

C6 - the C6 is a very rugged and reliable unit but it does not have overdrive.

AOD - this overdrive unit was used behind 302's through 1993. As Steve pointed out, it is not an electronic unit so you do not need a new EEC-IV computer. If you go with an AOD, get one out of a 92 or 93 truck; these have improvements and are better units than those made in the 80's. $400-600 from a wrecking yard.

AOD-E (4R70W) - this is an electronic version of the AOD. The 4R70W is a wide ratio version of the AOD-E (has a lower first and second gear ratio). If you go with this guy you will need to get the EEC-IV computer to go with it. More expensive-probably 600-800.

E4OD - this is an electronic heavy duty overdrive transmission. It is a very large and long transmission; if you use it you might have to relocate the rear crossmember that supports the transmission and change the length of your driveshafts. Also more expensive.

I would suggest the AOD or AOD-E(4R70W). You will love the overdrive for mileage and engine wear. The AOD-E will be more work and expense because of the electronic control.

Good Luck,
Ron

Really apreciate your input!
Was your truck originally a stick shift?
If so I'm keen to know how you hooked up the TV cable...
