55 inner fender question

Merry Christmas all,

I pulled the front clip off my 55 Ford yesterday for several reasons, but noticed that there is some sort of tape or anti-rattle strip between the fender and the inner fender on the top mounting edge. Was this an after thought by a previous owner or does someone carry such a product. I didn't find any in LMC.

I ask this since I will be replacing the inner fenders once the new suspension is installed, etc.

Thanks,
Pat

There was, on many of the trucks, a body sealant/anti rattle "goo," but not an actual strip.

Ho x 3

The '49s had a fiber strip that morphs over time into a unrecognizable mass.

Hi and welcome,
I have notice this putty like material on a lot of the mating surfaces on the front sheet metal on 53 - 56 Ford trucks. I assume it is there to help keep moisture out and to help with squeaks but am not sure.
I don't know if I'm right or wrong but when I assembled the front sheet metal on my M-350 this past summer I got some string putty from the local hardware store and put it between all joining surfaces. It sqishes out when the bolts are tightened then I smoothed it with the end of an old tooth brush.
Hopefully someone will come along and tell us if this was a good idea or not.
Bye for now, Old Ugly

Hi again . The product I used is called Weather Shield Crack Seal. Sorry I can't remember how to get pics on here. When and if I can figure it out again I'll put a pic up.

Any kind of a putty/sealant like that is ok. It was to minimise moisture collection, and insulate the metal on metal to eliminate squeaks, and friction fatigue.

Well that worked . I really needed the practice
I put a string of this putty on each side of the bolt holes close enough to the edge so some will squish out when the bolts are tightened. Don't forget to join the two strings at each end. After the bolts were tight I trimmed the putty then smoothed with the end of an old tooth brush. Hope this helps.
If anyone has a better idea by all means lets see it. Jump in with both feet.

The only other thing I would have used, is body sealant from the local parts store. The type that uses a caulking gun. Looks like that stuff is close to the same "rope" sealant they used to use.
