instrument cluster change out

Is it true that you can't trade out an instrument cluster on the F-150 from one vehicle to another? I have a friend that his odometer will not work (bad sodering) ,it kicks in once in a while but most of the time it does not light up,He found another cluster but was told it wouldn't work any truth to this sounds like bull to me but would appreciate a Technition to chime in.

The cluster would have to be reprogrammed to work with the truck it is going in at a dealer and I don't know if the mileage can be changed to match what is on the old cluster or if it would have to go back to Ford to get that done.

I had to change mine out. It will have to go to dealer and be reprogrammed. If you want to knock a few miles off the odometer, now would be the time to do it since you can put any number you want when it gets programmed (don't actually do this). I went with a new cluster, but I don't think buying a used one would be a problem unless the dealer won't install a used one.
