reattaching steering shaft/linkage

so i am in the process of putting back together my 96 f150 4x4 and i was trying to re-attach the steering shaft to the power steering pump but it was going on as easily as i thought. do i have the hammer it on or should the shaft just slide over the pump nice and easily. i dont want to ruin anything.

I guess you mean gearbox, not pump. You may need to tap it with a hammer

You need to line the splines up properly but just tapping it wont mess them up. It should slide on pretty easy, but i think it may need a little help with the hammer.
