Tank switching valve on 1985 diesel 6.9L no longer switches tanks

Hi guys, my name is Tim and I'm looking for a little help pointing me in the right direction. I thought I'd chime in here as your'e on the subject already. I have a very nice all original 85 F-250 4x4 Diesel 6.9 with dual tanks that just recently stopped switching from tank to tank Any ideas? Be gentle as I'm sure this question has been asked before. Thanks and sorry to barge in.

Welcome to FTE, Tim!

You're right, you shouldn't barge in on other people's problems, that's considered rude and is called "hijacking a thread."

So, I created for you a brand-new thread with YOUR problem and a descriptive title so as to attract those who might know; I believe the switching valve is different on diesels but am not sure, somebody will now for certain, though.

I apoligize, I am a member of two motorcycle forums with this format but rules seem to differ between them. On the larger one I would have been corrected for starting ANOTHER thread on the same basic issue I'll get the feel of you guys soon I hope. Thanks fer the fix P.S. When will I be able to manage attachments?

More than likely you need a new switching valve. The stores sell a universal one that needs a little bit of modifications to make it work, or I believe Ford may still sell the correct one, but they are proud of it and their price reflects that.

Thanks for the reply, Is it fairly easy to get to or is it the first part they built the rest of the truck around?

It's on the inside of the frame, on the driver's side, in the middle area of the truck.

No need to apologize, this is just how it works here. You did the best you could, what you thought was right.

Only paying Supporters can directly attach files to posts, the rest of us use a free external hosting provider (imageshack.us, photobucket.com, flicker.com, whatever) and then source the pictures from here.

The following will likely help you:

About your tank switching valve, well, you should verify this is the problem before throwing parts at it but it'd be a pretty good guess that that's the problem.

You can use a multimeter or test light (if if you don't have those, get them) to see if you have power at all the right places at the right times.

I don't remember what the colors of the wires are and where to probe, hope somebody who knows comes in.

If you need this part, you need to get the right one:

E3TZ-9189-C VALVE ASSY. (FUEL TANK SELECTOR) Fits 1983/86 E-F250/350 w/8 cyl. diesel engine (as well as other variants); contains 6 ports, marked with E3TB 9F271-AA
Ed Olson (our sponsor) www.partsguyed.com can sell this to you; MSRP $291.47 His discounted-for-FTE-members price: $209.86

Alternate (won't give you Ed's price):

Downtown Ford Sacramento, CA 95814 Tel. 916-442-6931 http://www.downtownfordsales.com/ has 1

There are a bunch more scattered around the country, too, lemme know if you need their names.

or

E5TZ-9189-B VALVE ASSY. (FUEL TANK SELECTOR) Fits 1985 E-F250/350 w/8 cyl 420 diesel engine, over 8500# GVW; contains 6 ports, marked with E57B 9F271-BA or E67B-9F271-AA; w/dual fuel line system
Ed can get you this, too... MSRP $290.77 Your price: $209.35

Alternate:

Crater Lake Motors Inc MEDFORD, OR 97504-4110 Tel. (866) 374-9412 http://www.craterlakemotors.com/ has 1

More of these around the country, too (I tried to list what is close to you).

I'm maintenance foreman at the airport here so I must be clear headed everyday, bedtime at or before 10 for me New development, my 85 blew a head gasket along with the switching valve It's pressurizing the radiator and forcing anti-freeze out of the overflow tank!!! PERFECT Guess yall be hearing from me on my next thread titled "Damnit"
