My 1988 F-150 302EFI also suffers from the dual fuel tank problem like so many others: if the front tank is selected, the rear tank gets empty too (and I get real good gasmileage on the front tank :-).
Spending the last 3 hours reading the archives of this board, I've learned that it is either the selector valve (45$ beneath driver, easy) or a check valve on the front tank (needs new in-tank pump, 180$, major PITA). How do I know which of the two it is?
Thanks a lot! This is a great site!

P.S.: Someone also mentioned they only put in-tank pumps into later (1990-) models. Is that true? In that case it must be the selector valve, mustn't it?
More than likely it is the selector vavle, but before you spend any money, check the recalls, I believe that this truck is covered under a recall for the selector/tank problem.
I'm pretty sure the recall was for 90-93 vehicles, but I'm definitely going to pop by the dealer and ask.
Is there a way I can find out which of the two (selector or check valve) it is without changing one of them?
Now I feel stupid. Sorry for the bad info I thought your truck was a 90 model for some reason. Upon further reading (and opening my eyes ) I see it is an 88 model.
