Engine Swap 5.4 to Newer 3v 5.4 - Advice/Help

Folks,
I have a 2000 F-250, 5.4, 4x4. The valve train sounds like a diesel at start-up and with 220K on the engine I am thinking about putting a new engine into the truck. Instead of going back with a used 2000 engine I was thinking of stepping up to a newer 3v.

I can get a 2008 used engine, complete, for around $2000. It is the 3v and should produce more power and better economy, I would think. That being said, will it work without major mods? Will it bolt up to my existing tranny which is working good? I know I would need an ECM but those are cheap. Are the motor mounts in the same place? Will the exhaust manifolds fit?

I am wondering if it is worth the trouble for whatever gains I will get. Just let me know y'alls thoughts before I head down the slippery slope.

Thanks in Advance,
Jason

The motor will bolt up the same.
You will need 3V exhaust manifolds.
The tranny will bolt up. But not sure if an 08 ECM will operate the trany.
You will probably need to use the current ECM and have it tuned to run the 3V.

I have not ever tried it, but I've read that you can use your same PCM, but you have to get lockouts for the phasers to disable the VCT.

If you are not comfortable with custom fabrication and custom tuning along with lots of little annoying issues that are going to pop up-My suggestion is to NOT even attempt to swap to a 3V. If you use phaser lockuots, then the power advantage of the 3V is pretty much gone, and you're not accomplishing anything.
