On my '55 I found a white glue/caulking substance on the bottom front and sides of the flat panels that the headlights and grill assembly mount to. These panels mount to the inside fenders.
I can't figure out what the stuff is or if I need to replace it with something when I reassemble everything.
Anyone know what this stuff is and what its intended purpose is?

 

It sounds like a PO was trying to seal up the cracks to force the air through the radiator.

 

So, Tom, what is a PO?
If that could be the reason for the "stuff" do you think I need to concern myself with trying to do some kind of sealer before I put it all back in place?

 

"PO" is short for Previous Owner.

 

Now that I know what PO is I should further explain where this stuff was. It wasn't like somebody caulked the gaps, this stuff was on the edges of the flat panels where they butt up against the inner fender. It seems as if these parts have never been disassembled since the truck was new so I am inclined to think the caulk (?) was factory installed.

 

Factory dum dum, a non-hardening putty substance to stop metal to metal contact and squeaks. My truck had it.

 

Mine had the same , I figured it was also used as a water/ dust barrier..
