Cleaning short block in the engine bay - see picture

Leaving the short block in the truck.

I need to clean/scrub the block (engine bay too) before painting it. What is the best way to cover the holes in the center of the block that currently have the rags over them in the picture below to keep cleaning solution or anything else from getting in there?

Thanks.

Get the deck and valley area of the black as clean as possible. Cut a piece of plastic, and tape it down with some heavy duty duck tape. Thats about the only way I can think to do it.

Any reason you dont just want to pull the motor at this point?

I do not have a motor stand and a motor puller. To rent one, I would have to have a way to get them to and from my house since my truck is obviously not an option. I don't want to spend the money buying new or used ones. So, I opted to do it this way.

Indeed. If I decide to do more projects like this (which I could see myself doing), I will invest in a motor puller and a good stand.

Nah you just need a solid tree and a come-a-long! I pulled a 390 out under the maple tree like that when I was younger. Cant say I recommend it, heh

I read a lot of posts where members will post questions about "how do I do...without pulling them motor?" A lot of the same responses - "It would be easier to just pull the motor if you are going that far." For anyone who is doing this and does not have the means to pull the block, I can say that this is more work but I am making some good progress.

Funny thing - (off topic) I have a 2006 Hyundai Tiburon that I bought 4 years ago. Shortly after I bought the car, I added a cold air intake to it - since I was so worried about messing stuff up under the hood, I paid a shop $45 to install it for me. I would never have thought that I would be pulling a motor apart.

Back to my project!
