2002 ford explorer

My head gasket seems to be blown, i have coolant in my sparkplugs
i took put the intake manifold and open the cover and seen that the engine is in an odd orientation, the timimg chain is facing(chain and sprocket) the firewall of the engine bay. I'm a little confused what to do since i am not an expert mechanic. Can anyone assist me of how I am to get the heads out?

Welcome to the forum!

I've read on this forum that that configuration of engine (SOHC, I believe) effectively requires you to remove the engine from the truck to replace the timing chain. You might try searching the forum, or wait for others with actual experience to post.

Rod is correct, the engine must come out in order that the rear cassette be removed.

And you guessed it, the timing chain has to be removed to pull the head.... Philip

There is a sequence to installing the new head bolts. The bolts are torque-to-yield bolts and need to be replaced, so I hope you weren't planning to reuse these.

Since there is a stepped sequence for torquing, with diagrams, I cannot really paste the information here. If you'd like a PDF excerpt from the factory service manual, send me a Private Message with the request as well as an e-mail address for you and I'll send the file your way tomorrow evening.
