I have to take both heads off the truck. I was wondering, if I advance the timing chain a few degrees, could I see some performance gains if i run 93 octane fuel in my truck, if so how much? I have a 1995 F350, with a 460ci engine. I run 93 octane right now, but I want to get some performance gains out of it. Is this too risky? And will this be an easy job, or is it a big project? I am not doing the job, but I was under the impression that you can get good access to the chain when the heads are off. Thank you.
i don't think you can access the chain period unless you take the bottom end apart. the heads being off will get you access to the pistons and thats about it.
You just have to remove the front accessories, harmonic balancer and the timing cover and waterpump. Get a timing chain set for a 71 model 460. It will be set up 4 degrees advanced over your stock one now. You do not need 93 octane unless you bump the ignition timing up to about 13 degrees with the spout plug unplugged. If it has close to 100k miles on it, then I would replace the timing chain and gears anyway.
Well what about just adjusting the distributor cap? I dont want to replace the chain really, I already droping $2,000 on getting these headgaskets put on, dont really have any more money to drop into that. Would getting a chip be the better route?
You can advance the ignition timing by turning the distributor a little. You will need 93 octane or it will ping, but on a 5.0 Mustang it's worth about 10hp.
Well that also includes them putting the headers in to, which was originally $600 quote before this incident. So they said they have to take that head off, then do both headgaskets, plus the charge to fix the head/replace it, and then put the headers in which requires them to extend the motor mounts with custom brackets so they will fit. So it is alot of money, but its going to be a big difference when I pick it up. Before I dropped it off I had a leaky manifold and apparently a chipped head, so I should see a big differennce after the headers and gaskets get and head gets replaced. Dont get me wrong, $2,000 is riducullous, but dollar for dollar its going to be the same everywhere else too.
