Ok, I think I need to put a sleeve on the end of my crank for the main seal. The seal surface is worn pretty good. I did clean surface with steel wool, it is pretty smooth. The rebuild kit did not come with one. Question, does the repair sleeve require a different seal or can I use the 1 that was in my gasket kit. I can get just the sleeve for $13.00. What does it take to install the sleeve?

 

Some rear main kits do come with speedy sleeves..... Ford did, it also had the installation tool.

I used a hammer and the tool IIRC...... you must also seal the speedy sleeve to the crank with Permatex Aviation #3 sealant.

 

I recently bought a repair sleeve for the rear main seal from rock auto. They are the only ones who carry this in my area. But the one they gave me had an inner diameter of 3.629". My truck, of course, is special, the outer diameter of the crank in the rear is 3.477". It's a 98 ranger with a 3.0 liter v6. Where do I get one????? I even called all my local ford dealers. Anyone else have this problem?

Have a read here, I didn't even use avaition cement on mine, just contact cement. Make sure you get it seated good.

Try Napaonline, they list the sleeve for your engine. Just make sure you select engine parts and gaskets on the left side, then your year, make , model, and engine size. Their description does not tell what it is for, so you have to make sure you have your engine selected to get right part. I prefer to go to store though, If I do get wrong 1 it is easier to return. autozone list 1 also. depends on whats in your area. As for paying for the install tool, it cost more the the sleeve. I just used a block of wood and "GENTLY" tapped "EVENLY" around edge until sleeve seated. Make sure sleeve does not stick out beyond end of crank, it will keep flywheel from seating all the way (I had this problem). Make sure you use locktite to keep sleeve on.

 

The part number I listed comes with the sleeve, seal, tool, and everything needed to do the rear main. Get at your local Ford dealer.

 

Is that part number for the 3.0 V6, that is what that user was looking for?

 

When I put the rear main seal on my former 2001 PSD, I had the tool but I found it easier to do with a short piece of 2x4 and a hammer.

 

Then it should be in the gas section

I ended up doing the same, was alot easier. I just finished it off with the tool.
