What is the consensus of the 6.4?

I'm looking at a few different F-250s and F-350s with the 6.4s in them. Can someone give me a brief summary of how these engines are performing now and any huge issues that are coming up with them?

Any links on the web would be greatly helpful.

One of the things I do not like about the 6.4 is that to me in the long run it is just a "three year engine." Will it be hard to find parts for the 6.4? Is this a true diesel engine that will go 500k miles? To me, if it was a really good engine why was it only around three years?

Don't think it will be hard to find parts..there are a bunch out that there and don't forget Navistar is still using it as well.

Good motor in my opinion. There is a learning curve with the emissions stuff.

This is also not a city motor, hwy/towing long commutes (miles) is where it performs best.

Maintance intensive though, need to be disciplined in your checking of fluids, hoses etc.

Weakest point it the radiator leaks, not an outright failure. Does not leave you on the side of the road. Just just leak at the seams.

Most of this seems to be taken care of now.

EGR can be an issue. They did a re-design of it though. Again, running this on the hwy, hard use will not have an EGR problem.

How can you say not a good city motor? You have no proof to back up your statement .......once again inwould love to see YOU state your opinion and not make statements like you are the 6.4 king and know it all, give advice man.... Opinionated advice..

the DPF needs high temps to clean out.. driving in the city all the time doesn't allow the dpf to get hot.. this causes all the regen issues, and fuel in the oil..

this is why we say great on the highway, and need to pay attention if only city driving.

The 6.4 has some more serious issues. Just do a search on cavitation and see if you still want one after seeing those pics.

Yes , that would include all the diesel engines with emissions crap not just the 6.4.
