2008, 09, or 2010 6.4ltr??
Hey guys, I'm in the market for a new truck. There are tons of great F250's, 350's, and 450's on ebay. My question is, the majority of them are 2008 models...is this coincidence?? Or is it maybe due to it being the first year of the 6.4ltr? Any thoughts on whether I should even consider the 08 6.4ltr, or look for a 09/10 model?? I'm even considering the new 6.7ltr as well. Going to use this truck to pull my 8000# travel trailer, that's why the DRW is looking good to me.

I've got an 08 job 1 F250 use it to pull our 7500# camper , only real issue was leaking radiator at 47000 mi, pulls like noting else I EVER HAD ,don't even know it's back there, IMHO don't be afraid of the 08s work them hard, they run best that way, grocery getters they are not.Follow the severe duty maintenance schedule, OEM filters ONLY and I run Diesel Kleen a good dose every fill up . Get one and enjoy the ride.

What sennix said. Plus, check the mileage. If you will do the research on this forum you will learn that owning a 6.4L out of warranty (over 100,000) is a crap shoot. There are a lot of very expensive repairs that can be needed. On the other hand if you can get one at an attractive price (low 20s loaded) or find a low mileage one or find someone who will give you an extended ford warranty you can get a great truck for a little cash. I think the jury is still out on how these trucks will hold up with high mileage, I did see one somewhere with 280,000 miles for sale so I guess it held up.

Thanks for the info. Stanley, I did read on here that there is a Ford bulletin out on the radiator for the 6.4 liter. If I get one still under warranty, that should take care of it I believe. Were there any other issues I should be aware of, I've got a 6.0ltr and have replaced the HPOP, LPOP turbo, EGR and some other goodies. Learning from that I put the stock intake back on, run Turbo Kleen also, and the wife drives it like she stole it. Are the 6.4's getting any problems other than the radiator? thanks

Yeah there are a lot of interesting things about this truck. It is new technology. The DPF is in the exhaust system and traps the soot. When it gets blocked enough the computer starts a "cleaning" cycle. That causes the computer to pour diesel fuel into the cylinders on the exhaust stroke. That runs the EGTs up high enough (1250 degrees or so), to burn up the soot. It also causes diesel fuel to get into the oil pan which dilutes the oil. It's worse with bio. That event occurs on my truck every 200 miles of driving and every 100 miles of towing my very heavy trailer.
There is also a problem with the Charge air cooler but most of those have probably been replaced by now. I suggest you spend some time on this forum and read a few of the posts about DPF, oil changes, CAC, deleting and tuning, radiators and radiator hoses. That should take you a long time but if you are considering one of these trucks it will be time well spent. They are great trucks but to have a good experience with one you need to know how they work and how to deal with them. Hope this helps.

I have a dually; and if I was going to pull an 8,000 lb. TT with no plans of pulling a heavier fifth wheel or gooseneck I would stick with a SRW for the slightly better fuel economy.
That said, my 08, job 2, DRW with the wide track front axle pulls my +14,000 fifth wheel great.
I would want an OASIS history of all warranty and also the service records before I would purchase a used 6.4. I would probably tell my best friend to stay away from purchasing a 6.4 unless it was a extremely good deal. I would also suggest that this is the vehicle to buy the extended warranty if the mileage is low enough and same is offered.
I have a co-worker that wants the chance to buy my truck if I decide to trade; I really do not want to offer it to him as I would hate for him to encounter major problems. My truck has not been abused and has been properly maintanined.

Your thoughts seem spot on. If I was you, I'd do what I can to get a 6.7.
Now that I've seen the introduction has been fairly problem free, I regret not spending the extra money on the 6.7.
Of course, a year and a half ago, who would have known how successful the 6.7 would be.
