Dreaded "Door Ajar"

When I got my new to me truck, the PO said he didn't know why the dome light didn't work. He also told me that the door ajar light comes on pretty much all the time.

When I got home I took the dome light cover off and low and be hold, no light. Then it dawned on me. No light because the door ajar light is on all the time. So before I even found this site, I squirted WD40 into the door latches. (and I'm a girl and I thought of that! LOL) That turned into a door latch not taking hold anymore and we ended up having to buy a new one. After that, the light was on for a few more times, then it started going off. Every time I drove the truck, ajar light would go off. So I told hubby to start looking for a dome light.

So here we are today. I put the dome light in and no luck. So I start to take the whole unit off the headliner and the light flickered. Figured out the screw was loose so, bad ground. Tightened everything up and the dome light worked. I shut the door and after a few seconds the dome light went off! Awesome!!

Then I decided to look at the back dome light. Took it out and it appears to be burned out. So I just left it out and was going to go tell hubby how excited I was that all was well. BUT, I stopped and waited for the front dome light to shut off again. It didn't! I put the back dome light back in thinking maybe it needed to be in there, but no luck.

Now the dumb door ajar light is coming back on! I sprayed everything down again but still not going off. So later I am going to pull all door panels to see if I can see any bad wiring or maybe the switches just need to be cleaned.

Will report later on how things go!

It is usually just a dirty door switch. If it is real bad, it may take 4-5 applications of WD-40 and a while to work it in to make the switch work again.

Kim, I had the same issue on my F150.

I first hosed it down with Aero Koil, a penetrating solvent (like PB Blaster). 2 applications of that working it a little bit . After that I sprayed it down with silicone, again a couple of applications and work it in.

That was 2 years ago and I haven't had the issue since.

I took the back driver side door apart to check out the wiring. It all seemed fine so I squirted everything with WD40, from the inside. I sprayed actuator and all! It worked the first time I shut the door, then it quit working again. Hubby decided to just cut the wire for now. That worked! LOL Yah, now the light doesn't come on when you open that door, but at least it works with the front doors.

We will fix that door when we fix the actuators. That will be further in the summer.

Spray some silicone spray in the lock assemblies to. I had this happen twice on my SD. I first cleaned all the door latches with brake kleen and then sprayed PB blaster in them and sprayed silicone in the door locks. Fixed everything for about 2 years, had to do it again. Fixed it again. I might just do it again once it warms up a little this year since its been 3 years now.

WD 40 every couple years when it pops up. Usually couple sprays over a few days.

If my dome light switch acts up, I plan on doing a mod to use a conventional dome light door switch from a wreck in the junk yard. I've read in these forums that this problem happens quite often.

"Quite often", is NOT the word for it......When it happened to me last week....Although it was the first in the last four years . I have owned my truck 14 yrs. and ,"YES"...It is an ongoing problem....If it doesn't take much cash to do the mods. you're talking about, go to town on that one!
It happens over & over again...So it may pay you to~~Your head ache will be "Dust in the wind", instead of ...{Dust in the door latch}
