After market intake

74 390, going with the Edelbrock performer RPM intake, should i use the cork gaskets on the ends of the intake or use sealant only to fill the void?

use some RTV, don't use the cheap cork or rubber gaskets.

Use both, that 390 has a wet manifold correct? That means it will see pressure, even if only a few pounds that could be enoughto push out just glue. If its supposed to use a gasket, then use a gasket. Just cover the gasket in glue too.

as long as you make sure you hit the corners where the block, manifold, and heads meet with rtv, the cork gaskets shouldnt be a problem.

Edelbrock recommends NOT using cork or rubber gaskets. They commonly get pushed out. Use a bead of rtv.

I've built numerous 390's...Don't use the end gaskets...big fat bead of Ultra Black Permatex or Right Stuff...don't spread it...leave as a bead...put around coolant passages on intake gaskets...but spread that....put it together...but make sure to let it set a few hours before trying to fire up the motor...i got a coolant leak into the engine once because I rushed it.

i've also bought a Edelbrock performer intake but its for a 460, so would you guys recommend the same. Just use a bead of silicone?

Does anyone recommend using permatex high tack gasket sealant on the heads for helping to seal the gaskets to intake? Edelbrock recommends using Edelbrock Gasgacinch #9300, it looks as if the Permatex is an equal i think. Thank you.

on my Cougar's cleve. I orig. did like the kit said.. oh an i did a meticulous job.. made sure to use rubber end's and lots of rtv was seated in there just so. then made sure to finish the job with rtv up to my ear lobes. Of course i waited a full day before i tentatively fired it up. i'd say it was oh 30kms till i realized it had crapped out sideways and i was weeping oil in my clean engine bay and all over my shiny motor. after that i cleaned it up. did two lines of rtv black only one front one back and up the sides of the heads. slammed the alum. intake down and bolted it to spec. hasn't leaked or sweated one bit since been like 5+ years now.
