Help! I'm trying to select a good cam for my 460.
I need help selecting a good cam for my 460. The truck is a '74 F250 4x4 going to be used for off-roading, and street cruzing. Here are the specs:
Ford C9VE block with .30 over.
C8VE-E heads with pocket porting done and stock valve sizes.
KB flat top hyper pistons with a +2.5 valve relief.
3.850 stroke with stock rods.
Weiand Stealth Intake.
Demon 750 cfm carb.
MSD pro billet distributer with blaster 2 coil.
Mad Dog full length headers.
4:88 rear gears and 38" tires.
C6, stall will be decided based on cam.
Compression ratio will be around 10.2:1 to 10.3:1 with SCE .093 thick and 4.630 bore head gasket.
91 Octane.

What were you thinking for cam style - hydraulic or solid flat tappet? Or hydraulic roller? Roller is an expensive upgrade, but very reliable and great power - especially when you consider todays oil issues with flat tappet cams...... Comp makes some nice choices and have a good line of magnum and x-treme energy cams.

While you are checking everything in the valve train for clearance don't forget to check retainer to valve guide clearance. I've never used C8's but if they are like other b.b. heads you will need to cut their height down to fit the stem seals in or better yet cut them for PC seals while your at it. For your build I would highly recomend some bigger valves.

I would not worry about larger valves unless you are trying to get every last bit of power, if heads were fully ported than yes bigger valves.
stock heads with valve seals are basically good for .540 lift before retainer to seal contact; AKA BENT PUSHRODS. have seen alot of 429-460 go .560, but they did not run vary well due to stock springs.
budget choice would be SUMMIT RACING OWN #3501 CAM
my personal choice would LUNATI VOODOO #61602 CAM
it would give stupid power in that motor. Have a good sound
and be easy to live with on the street.
Stock torq converter good to 1800 stall, maybe 2000- 2500 stall would fit the bill just right between street and offroading.
