My 1966 tailgate has a second skin of putty and its also warped. Since I have spent so much $$ already I am looking for a flat/straight tailgate. It looks like 1966 is not being reproduced but 1967-1972 is. What is the difference between 1966 and 1967 tailgates?

 

Don't take this as gospel but I'm pretty sure the only diff is the style of the stamped in letters. My 65 has a 70's tailgate.

Correct the lettering size is the only difference. Gates through 79 will fit.

 

should I get the $400+ tailgate or the $150.00 one?

 

It's all up to personal preference. JCWhitney has a 1973-79 gate for $90, might make a nice solid candidate for a smooth skin custom.

The only difference between 64-6 and 67-72 tailgates is on the outer top panel above the latch. The early ones had a fine lip across the entire width and the newer ones had a kind of bar across the upper panel. The body lines on the 73-79 are different on the bottom.
