Looking at 2008

I am getting ready to trade-in my 01 F250 and was looking at the 08's. I've heard the milage is poor as far as a stock truck. What are some other issues I should be aware of? I put a lot of miles on (01 has 280k) and want like the reliability of the 7.3. Is this something that is possible with the 6.4? Any suggestions on improving milage.
Thank-you for any info.

I ordered my 2008. My build date is june 2007. I have not had one problem with my 6.4L. I had to have the fuel sender replaced under warranty, but that has been it. Yes the fuel milage is a little lower than most people like. But that is due to the restrictive emmisions systems. I only have 18845 miles on the truck, and almost 900 hours.....but I love my truck.

The only problem I have read about is the radiator on the 08's during a particular build period. If you search radiators I am sure you will find threads on it. FMC have extended the warranty on these I believe.

The gas milage stock is poor due to the DPF and emissions. Towing you will get anywhere form 8-9 mpg. You can delete the DPF and go with a tune and most people then get anywhere from 15-20 mpg depending on the tune. Keep in mind that if you delete the DPF and go with a tune then chances are you are going to void your warranty thru FMC.

I love my 2009 SD and I am new to the 3/4 ton world. The people on here are awsome to learn from and they are always willing to help if you have a problem. Everything I stated above I learned from coming here everyday and reading. Good luck to you and welcome to FTE

MPG's vary too widely to say it will get this doing that.

I am around 13 city and close to 17 hwy driving 65-70 empty. I can get 7-9 pulling my 5er and 11-12 pulling flatbeds.

Best thing I can say is this motor likes the boost to get it going. Stay off the boost, keep your rpms below 2K which is more like 65 mph for me and it will do well.

Keep your city driving to the min. as that kills mpgs and your motor.

This is not a city truck. It has a hwy, working motor in it. Short runs/stops and you will begin to have problems with it.

do the severe maint schedule, check fluids weekly and it should be fine.

Run it hard and long and don't be afraid of WOT and then you will like the truck.

hey senix. in responding to your quote its my thoughts that if you do a dpf delete kit then it can be more of a city truck right? My thinking is that since the truck can't regen well in the city then this is one of the main issues with stop and go type driving. However, if you remove the dpf and regeneration requirements then your back closer to the 7.3 and 6.0 type engines right? Just curious as mines idles alot and thus far i've had no issues. Knock on wood though....

After (7) F150's over the last 40 years I purchased an 08 F250PSD 4 X 4 Off Road Lariat in Sept of 2010 - had 27K on it when I got it - build date was in July '07 - the Radiator started to leak about 30 days after the 36 month warranty period - So I had to pony up $1,150 to get it replaced - I am still working on Ford for the $780 for the Radiator -I let everyone know when I get a formal response.
I've had one fuel issue - I think it is partially due to bio in Illinois fuel - this happened less than 600 miles after I changed fuel filters - ($99 for the set) $321 for diagnostic and new fuel filters.
I have had the "white smoke" issue and have the local Ford dealer order the parts for TSB 08-25-01 - corrective work will be covered under the 100,000 mile drivetrain warranty - this work should be scheduled this week.

I put about 25,000 miles on annually on my trucks - Self employed, use truck for work - pull a 27' travel trailer with slider weighing about 9,000 lbs loaded - I get just over 11 mpg pulling the trailer - and get about 17 - 18 on hyway without trailer - I don't drive it hard, around town will run 11 to 13 - not a lot differnt than my last F150 with the 5.4L
4 X 4 -
This is the best looking truck Ford has ever built and it is alos my hunting turck - Bow hunter - Souhtern Illinois
Once I am comfortable I have addressed all the issues with this truck that can be coverd under warranty I will go the DPF delete with a tuner -
Be ready for some baggage - understand that diesel repairs can be expensive -
cost of ownership should be calculated over 250,000 mile life expectancy -if your willing to keep it that long you'll love the truck Good Luck

I agree, the regen is the biggest of issues in my mind. Don't forget the EGR clogging up on you. that should be ok though with a certain amount of heavy footing it.

I have my dpf deleted and do almost all city driving. The only time I do a lot of highway is when Im pulling the 5er. I do think it is important to get the truck up to normal operating temps. These motors seem to like it hot. If I havent done much highway driving I try to run it hard now and again. It think it helps, but honestly I believe that the dpf is why these stock motors dont like much city driving. I have 24k on my truck now no problems (knock on wood) but again Ive been deleted since about 2k.

Sorry I forgot to mention. I agree with Senix when you can hammer on it. Run it hard as much as you can. Its the best thing for a diesel in my opinion and yes your mpg will suffer because of it. You dont need to do it all the time but if you havent been driving hard or long for a minute I would recommend it.
